VJ family can you pls give me a sample of a letter to send to IRS about amending the marital status from single to married filling separate. My spouse is going to send the 1040 x tomorrow and he is busy all weekend. I realized that he need to write a letter explaining why he is amending his tax 2013.

I have sent in amended federal tax returns several times, never have included a letter and never had any issues.

Good luck.

No need to write a letter. I've mailed amended tax returns before and never wrote a letter. The address you mail it to tells the IRS what it is. Besides, they won't pay any attention to a letter. All they care about is the form. Trust me on this, the IRS could care less what a letter may say. Whenever I've had problems with them, they completely ignore my letters, only care about their official forms. Worst government agency on the planet, bar none.

Where did you mailed yours?

Like others have stated, there is no need to attach a cover letter to your Form 1040-X. Just use Part III of the form to explain why you are amending the return.

Is the letter you're thinking about only to be used as a cover for your 1040X or is the return being changed to add a non-resident alien for the tax year you are filing for?

If you're adding a non-resident alien spouse for that tax year, you need to add a written declaration electing this for the tax year.

Done: I-130/CR-1, I-751/ROC

Done: I-327
