You, unlike the other poster, will want to be cautious about doing this. Make sure any fees you may owe are completely paid before you activate your visa. Get your last medical check ups done by your doctor etc. Once you become a resident of the USA, you are no longer a resident of Canada. Tuition, medical care, etc... is all based on residency, not citizenship.

You have 6 months, but you can certainly cross and activate your visa if you want. As I stated above, just be careful because of residency issues. Because you're working part of the year in Canada, you will have a little bit of interesting things to do regarding taxes (you still have to file in Canada) in both countries.

Thanks NLR, as a graduate student they are more lenient about residency and so becoming a US resident won't affect my tuition. I do get a stipend from school so i'm not sure how that will affect my US taxes...

As for medicare etc, my husband just put me on his employer's insurance so i should be all good there too i think. Might just have to consider travelers health insurance when i come to Canada?

Yes if your husband's insurance doesn't cover trips outside the USA. You can check to see what they do cover.

Yes, you do eventually get an email that they've received your packages, but the quickest way to find out is to call. I would wait a week to call and check. After I submitted by IV package, I called and they said they didn't have it so I re-sent it and waited two weeks. I ended up getting two emails for the 1st AND 2nd time i sent it! And they went by the 2nd times scan date. So just try to be patient for 1-2 weeks and then call

Thanks. Gosh it'd be nice if they had an automated response that went "Your email has gotten to the NVC. Please wait X-X days for processing to receive a scan date." Instead I'm left going "GAAAAAAAH DID I MESS UP WHICH EMAIL ADDRESS I AM TO SEND IT TO?"

man it seems like montreal isnt doing a second round of interviews for february? CC dec 30th and no interview date, called last night.

I was looking at trends and they typically do scheduling at end of month/beginning of year and then mid month (12th to 14th~). Was hoping to get a February interview!

Montreal typically does releases interview dates at the beginning of the month and they're given out by the 15th. Because you were in a heavy month it's probable that you won't get your interview date until early Feb for a March date.

Still clinging on to small hope that they will distribute it today or tomorrow. I will call friday night to see, if nothing then i will just wait for my P4 email and a likely march interview.

How long did it take those of you who chose EP to get a scan date? I sent my stuff on the weekend and still don't have a scandate. I called Wednesday and the rep said it would show up on CEAC when I got one. This process takes long enough without them delaying even scanning. Should I keep calling?

Uuuuuugh. So basically this is just like when USCIS sends them stuff. They scan it when they bloody well feel like it and if it delays us by a week, two, three, a month, who gives a flying?

I never looked for anything on CEAC, I received an email a week or two after they received my docs, and the receipt date was always a couple of days after I sent my email with my documents.

I submitted docs on Nov 19 and got a confirmation email on Dec 14 saying it would be 60 days from Nov 19th. Called and called in between and no one could help. It's a little frustrating to say the least.

The operators are a little disconnected from the EP system since very few countries actually do it. They often cannot see anything if you use EP.
