Wow!! Your case went quickly!!! I hope for the same luck! I'm super nervous and anxious.

Yours went through quicker!!!! Share your magic, please. How did you get your NOA2 in 34 days? It's fantastic!!! Good luck at the NVC.

Does there happen to be a thread just for Canadians cases at NVC?? No offense to any other VJ'rs, but it'd be nice to follow other Canadians moving to US, and not have to scroll through posts/pages from so many other countries.

Just curious, and best of luck to all.

Peace. :)

This was a great idea, Sylea!!!

I'll be sure to watch this topic.

Lol! I wish it was magic! I think it has something to do with the fact that my husband is currently living abroad and we got transferred to the California center.

Which way do you guys think is the best way to send your documents to NVC? EP, or snail mail? List your pros and cons if you have any.

Well I'm not so sure I'd call it quick... although the NVC stage went alright. My petition was held up last year along with 100's of thousands of others.... and sat collecting dust for 6 months before receiving an NOA2

I am sorry to hear that, but you've come so far!! Appreciate your struggle. I hope my NVC timeline looks like yours :-). Did you have any issues with domicile? What did you present? If anything?

Wow, thanks to all who replied to my first query. I think I was really looking for a thread where us Canucks moving stateside can share experiences as well as process.

Saylin's wikis on the NVC process are very helpful, but the June filers thread was completely congested within 2 days of being set up, and trying to move through posts from countries that have completely different processes was frustrating to me. (It's only June 10th and that thread is up to 143 pages...)

We have an immigration lawyer, so the NVC process for me will be minimal as she will be sending in all the forms and documents, and guiding me through the rest.

I feel like everything will start moving along quite quickly for me now, (at least I hope so! LOL) so would be good to chat with other Canucks who have already been through the process.

I'd also like to know if anyone has any moving company recommendations - I will be shipping my personal effects, have talked to Atlas Van Lines only, so far. I'd love to get some referrals from here as well.

Peace all.

:)

Thanks Mrs thb - it'll be good to see how quickly things move along now for all of us, especially after the painfully long wait for the NOA2!!

My husband moved back to the US just prior to sending in the I-130 petition, so no domicile issues.

The NVC thread is still a vast catalogue of advice even though it moves fast and has other countries involved.

For example, you've stated you are using an attorney, and there are a lot of stories from the other thread which would make me quickly lose the attorney and do this alone, as they are not intimately concerned about you losing a few days or weeks or even months while the paperwork sits or mistakes present themselves and you get checklists. :bonk:

Whereas individuals who want each and every day to be minimized will have the paperwork ready in advance and have checked and rechecked and used the advice from those on this forum to get things done efficiently and accurately.

There are many threads on moving advice, and because of following them over the last 9 months or so, I'm using U-Pack :P

I'm curious to know more about cashing in rsp's and tfsa prior too vs after leaving. I read on here that once a non-resident of Canada, tax rates increases to 25%. Being Canadian and being 'taxed to the max' is difficult enough, I do not want to be taxed any further. I have my financial advisor looking into this but your experience and knowledge would help too.

Any tips on reducing clutter and purging would be helpful as well. Its difficult to know what I'll need and what I won't. Even though the hubby and I have discussed this many times, its still difficult to put everything into perspective. I'd hate to pay moving/shipping costs only to toss stuff once I settled in the US. Like.......Anything you regret tossing that you wished you kept? Anything you brought that you wished you didn't?

Thanks Lakehouse - so far, our lawyer is doing everything correctly and we have no reason to 'lose' her as you say. She had all the documentation pre-prepared for NVC and ready to send as soon as we have our Case number. She responds to all our questions with patience and grace, and is always very positive about the whole process. We're very happy with her service so far.

THanks for the U-Pack link - that looks like a perfect way to ship my stuff, I put in a request for a quote but have yet to hear back.

Peace.

Nothing wrong with a lawyer, but just be advised that they cannot make your case go faster. Unfortunately some lawyers imply this.

Search for Moving in the Canadian forum, you'll find plenty of threads on how people did it. It comes up as a topic every week.
