Brandon man booked into jail after drunken armed standoff with SWAT team

BRANDON — A man who engaged deputies in an armed standoff Sunday evening, firing more than 20 rounds from a shotgun inside his home, was booked overnight into the Hillsborough County Jail.

Barry William Engh, 53, was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of what officials described as "extreme intoxication." He was later jailed on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and discharging a firearm in public.

Deputies arrived at Engh's home at 509 N Larry Circle in Brandon about 4 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of gunshots. Outside, they found Engh armed with a long-barrel gun, authorities said.

Engh retreated into the home and repeatedly fired at deputies throughout the evening while encouraging them to kill him, Sheriff David Gee said. Engh had a small arsenal of guns lined up at the front door.

When negotiations with Engh failed, a SWAT team fired gas canisters into the house and stormed inside, where they took him into custody.

Engh, who works for a catering company, according to jail records, had been struggling with recent family issues and an alcohol problem, authorities said.

He was held in jail Monday on $8,000 bail.

ETA: His bail would probably be $800k, not $8k as well.

He's lucky he didn't end up with boom! Headshot! If the SWAT team had a clean shot, I'd be willing to bet he'd be dead now.
