'Colbert Report' visits the Keys to check in on the gun culture

I am not a gun nutter, and I am rather gun neutral, but I came across this article and video while checking my local Keys online newspaper. I am a part time resident of Big Pine Key with a home there so I thought I would check it out. Then I noticed it was about a guy in Eden Pines Colony subdivision where my house is. As I started watching the video my jaw dropped as every scene and every person interviewed I knew so very well. They are my neighbors. My house is FIVE houses away from this nut. Yes, 4 houses seperate me and him. I was down there over Memorial day weekend and I saw several targets outside and my wife and I commented about them, but Doug and his family (wife and 4 yorkies) had left for the summer. I think they spend the summer in Wisconsin. I really don't know him well other to say hi while driving buy in the boat or wlking the dog past his house.

LOL. Nothing wrong with guns. We've been thinking about getting our own, but this guy is really endangering the neighborhood. The lots down here are really small. Most are 75' wide by 100' deep. Neighbors are close, and boaters even closer.

I'm surprised there aren't any regulations for where you can shoot, ie, a certain distance from other dwellings, or roads. Of course this is Florida we're talking about and I'm in MA, so we are at extremes with gun laws.

That would not fly even here in a populated area. That is insane. Has to be more to it. Was that satire, you think ? If not it must be some quirky loophole they will fix quickly

I don't think this was satire. I know the neighbors don't like him, but I thought is was because of his yapping yorkie dogs. I like to walk my dog past his house just to stir them up. I have seen the targets but it was only this year that they appeared. I have honestly never seen or heard him shoot but I am only there about every other weekend and holidays.

A couple of folks that work for code enforcement live a little further up the canal and I am sure if it were a legal issue they would have nailed him. They got me when I was doing some dock repair without the proper permit.

Doug found a loophole and is expoiting it even if it endangers others. You've got to understand, however, that the Keys is a very different place.

Child molestation is against the law. Molesters are always painted with a negative brush, no matter what form they come in.

If it were safe I could not care less, what the neighbors thought, but it is not safe, nor is it an example of a responsible gun owner.

Problem is, I've never heard of any responsible gun groups. Where are they? Who are they? How come they never speak out against this kind of garbage? If responsible gun owners were really concerned about getting their word out, they would be doing so. You never heard of the NRA. Promotes Gun safety and education. Spends a ton of money on it.
