I received my EAD and started work on May 1st, submitting an I-9 form as a nonresident alien.

Somewhat sooner than expected, I subsequently had my AOS interview and ultimately received my Green Card, becoming a resident alien.

I've let my employer know about this change, but it's not immediately clear to either of us whether we need to re-submit any paperwork. I'm listed in their outsourced HR system as a nonresident alien, which means my payroll was listed as Single (even though married) for tax purposes in May, but I'm keen to change now that I am a permanent resident.

As far as we can tell, the purpose of the I-9 is to make sure I'm legit at the time of employment, rather than an ongoing record of legitimacy. We're looking to correspond with the outsourced HR company, but would appreciate clarification for anyone who has experienced a similar situation. Is there perhaps a different form that corresponds to a change of immigration status?

You can update your I-9 if you are concerned about it. You will need to do this anyway prior to the date your EAD would have expired. The I-9 has nothing to do with your tax withholding that would be the W-4. You can withhold anyway you wish. I withhold at the married but single rate and file taxes as married filing jointly. All the tax withholding status does is determine how much money is withheld from your paycheck and goes to taxes. If too much is taken out you should get a refund when you file. if not enough is taken out you have to pay when you file.

I had the same issue. I spoke to someone in HR about filling out a new I-9 and all she said was 'if you want to' so I'm gonna assume it's not a requirement. Like someone said, the I-9 proves you are eligible to work at the time you are employed and onboarded.
