Hi everyone,

I just arrived to the US (San Jose, California) 2 weeks ago, doing an internship on a J-1 exchange Visa. Unfortunately, before I had the chance to apply for a social security number, I lost my passport.

I am about to go through the long painful process of getting a new passport, which could take up to 3 months. So I was wondering if there is any way I can apply for an SSN and a California ID card or driver's license without my passport.

I still have my I-94 and DS-2019 forms as well as photocopies of my passport. I also have a Canadian Driver's License as a photo ID.

If anyone has experienced something similar or has an idea what I could do I would appreciate any help.

I believe you need a valid "real" passport.

I tried to change my SSN status and I was asked to see it.

Most DMVs, also want to see your certified documents. Without the valid passport, they will not process your request.

Don't you have an international driver license? I believe you can obtain it here in the US too.

Don't worry. First give a police complaint then apply duplicate passport. Now you have I-94 and DS-2019 forms so it's save you from other legal problems. Shortly you ll get duplicate passport, then apply SSN.
