Thank you so much everyone for the info. We are still worried... we called the border crossing and the lady said that it all depends on the border guard on whether or not you have to import the vehicle. Some border guards don't even ask about it and other border guards ask why you are not importing it and want you to import it. We don't even know what to do... we don't have enough money to import it or make sure it meets US standards and we are getting married in a few weeks. Does he cross the border and chance it? or maybe it's better to sell the car...

I crossed the border without importing my car. At the time I was unable to import it since Toyota refused to issue compliance letters (they have since changed their policy). I was going to ask a question about it but totally forgot and the border guard didn't even bring it up. I ended up importing my car about five months later when Toyota reversed their compliance letter policy. I had special 'Category Z' insurance in the meantime through ICBC that covered me in the USA. When I finally imported my car and registered it, I mailed my BC plates back and got a partial refund for the coverage I didn't use for the year.

Thank you all again for the info. We decided we are going to sell his Canadian car and he is going to fly here. We found out that in order to import it, it would cost us $800 for it to meet the US standards. We just can't afford that. Even 6 months or a year down the road... that's just too much money.

That is a bit considering you have the AOS to pay for and he wont be working or collecting EI for about 90 days after the AOS is filed. Hopefully you guys can make it work with one car for a while.
