rant: I really don't understand why one person's success or good fortune should open everyone else to attempts to piggy back off them. I am having a really difficult time today with hubs in regards to giving his family money, which I flat out refuse to do. Is there I point where I should cede? What is so wrong with them working for it themselves? Feeling really conflicted, and am seriously upset with his behavior and attitude about this situation. It genuinely makes me feel like I am not his priority, and being number 2 feels spectacularly crappy when I always put him so far ahead of everyone else.

Sigh.

This is a bad habit to get into. Many cultures, my wife's included, the children feel a need to send money home once they succeed. When they come to a place like America, there can be this hit the lottery feeling back home and with the immigrant. They'll feel guilty they have so much, and the family has less, even when the family is doing fine. Do not get into the habit of sending money, just to send money. And yeah, I certainly know the feeling that you are number 2 behind family, but don't let yourself go thinking that way, that is not really how it is, but it really feels that way to Americans. Hold your ground on this. Let him know in an emergency you're willing to help, but there will be no tithing to the great Momma back home. We send money back monthly, part to support a no retired mother, she's 66. And part to send her adopted twin siblings to school, which she was paying before she came here. But I'd never send this money if there was not a specific need for it. One day when her mother retires, you may need to pitch in to help support her, but don't start creating an over inflated standard of life now or you'll regret it forever. If you create a situation where they need not work, what will happen to them if something happens and you cannot send? I'd suggest a compromise with your husband, set aside so much money per month in a separate account. This will be used for emergencies only, but not to raise their standard of living. When it comes time that Momma retires, then you can start drawing from that to assist in her support.

Nah she wants to get citizenship first, so she needs to keep me around for another year yet.

My take is that:

If the immigrant himself is out of work and NOT contributing to his current US household, then he should not have the AUDACITY to ask his US wife to send money home so that his family could have the latest gadgets in the world.

Same apply to new immigrant wife. No working? No money to send home then. Period.

Unless there is really life and death back home or the family are really living from hand to mouth.

When I first arrived in US and not working, I am very self-conscious about spending money with my hubs working only.

I would never ask my hubs for money to send home.

I really can't understand how some people could be that thick-skinned to ask for money/stuff without them working for it.

It's a good thing that you started beating her up before she started asking.....

Her brother started trying to get a free ride on my wife, his wife pushed him to ask. I never heard word one about it until much later. When I did I told her straight out I'm not working my butt off so her family can sit on theirs. My BIL's wife is a complete lazy azz person who won't even take care of her own kids or house, she hires a maid and nanny, and doesn't even work. Her spending habits are keeping them poor and broke constantly. While the rest of the family is moving forward and living better.
