Hey all,

This question may have been asked before, but I couldn't find anything on it when I searched... I am wondering what you need if you are from the UK wishing to drive in the US on a visa waiver? Do you have to get an international drivers license or is the normal UK drivers permit allowed with a passport? I am asking for the sake of my fiance's family who will be coming over for the wedding and want to rent a car while they're here, for obvious reasons. I just want to make sure they don't get here and have an unpleasant surprise to find out they need an international drivers license or something.

D and I once went on a road trip in the US...from Central FL to Northern VA...and I had to do all the driving cos we were in my car and I didn't want there to be any issues with driver's licenses, ins, etc.

What a trip! I was effing exhausted!

He tried ONCE to teach me how to drive over there. We went into an industrial part of town on a Sunday. Well let's just say I don't drive stick in America, let alone when it's on the other side of the car...and the driving on the left was just sooo odd...I couldn't master it!

Oh, and I also destroyed his clutch too

The UK licence is in two parts, the pink photo card along with the regular paper licence. You must have the two parts together for it to be valid.

To add on, what does my fiance need to get a US Drivers license? All I saw was his paper license but no photo license. He was even confused when people wanted photo ID here cause apparently you don't even have to have your license on you when you drive over there...

Does he just need to take the written & driving test? What papers does he need? SS? Birth Cert? etc?

I left my car in the US while I finish up my degree in the UK (I'm the UK Citizen)

I miss my car so much and had a ball with it while I was in the US for 18 months. To get my license; I know in VA they require a social security number, proof of residency (bank account, pay slip I know are guaranteed) plus at least 3 proofs of identity - which can include bank account, passport, visa, social security card etc.

I wonder if I will have to do the driving test again when I return? I hope not! Although it was rediculously easy!

If your not entirly sure what you need, maybe contacting DVLA might help :)
