Lots of snow last night, lots of accidents this morning. I've been driving to work since the east side rapist is still on the loose, but I figured he wouldn't be out in action today in the snow and cold, and it would be more dangerous to drive. So, I took the bus. Brrr.

I ventured out for the first tmie in the snow today. Out of sheer necessity of getting to work. We got light 'lfurries' which were NOT supposed to accumulate, but apparently they did not get the memo...And now more snow is due tonight so back to the Doctor's house I go, but this time without the dress shoes..

Happy Monday.

Ok this has been totally strange. Every place Mohammed goes Mexican guys come up to him and start talking Spanish to him. Has anyone else's SO had this happen to them? Mohammed just laughs and says he's from Egypt.

It happens to my dad alot.

I call Ali "The Mexican". He goes to english classes and seriously he knows more spanish now than I do. What was one of the first things he learned in English class ? "Que Paso ?" Which means What's Up . I swear I was laughing so hard. When we see Mexicans (we live in CA) I always tell Ali "Relatives of yours?" and he says "Yeah ... I brought them over". Funny thing is when someone speaks spanish to him he just smiles and nods and they have no clue he doesn't understand what they are saying.

So yeah my husband will be trilingual when he is done with his ESL classes.

Reunited and it feels so good ....

When Mohammed bought his first car in America, the dealer asked for his license. He said that he had an international license and the dealer said 'Ok, give me your license from Mexico'. The look on Mohmammeds face was priceless. :)

Hey . . . people walk up to me and start speaking spanish too!!! And with my last name (I am keeping the old one, lol), I have started getting junk mail and spam in spanish! I got to tell you that they always walk off scratching their heads when I say in english "I dont speak spanish" . . . they must think I am one of those 3rd generation Chicanas that does not want to be identified as such. So happens that I am of mostly Greek heritage (that's where the love of olive oil must come from . . . runs in the veins).

Oh, I get "Arabi" comments while I am in Egypt too and I have had that same confused reaction in Cairo . . . I blend right in . . . as long as I keep my mouth shut . . .. which my husband asks me to do while we are riding around in taxis, so we don't have to pay the foreigner price, hehe!!! I gotta great story about that one . . . but that is for another day!

People frequently ask me if I am greek, italian, spanish. Arabic is usually their last guess.

This happens to my husband frequently, especially when he is clean shaved.

Hehe, I do this too, especially so I can get cheap hijab prices. I go up, dig through and throw the ones I want at my husband. He negotiates the price. People must think either I'm extra modest/shy or that I'm deaf

My husband frequently gets the spanish thing as well. He volunteers with an tax group that does taxes for poor people, and people will sometimes assign him to translate for spanish speakers  He's a translator, but not for that language, lol.

Allllllllllllllllllll the time.

My town is about 60 % Hispanic (maybe more) so it's not a totally off-the-wall assumption for a stranger to make. But at first, my husband just didn't understand it at all -- "Whyyyyy do they think I am Mexican ????!!!"

Most of his co-workers are Mexican-American, and they already made up a sort of "Mexican-style" nickname for him, because they say they can't pronounce Mahmoud.

One of the funniest incidents (well, it made me laugh) was when he was working on a project at a local military base. He went to the gate and the guard took one look at him and started speaking in Spanish. My husband said "I am not speaking Spanish -- I am Arab." The guy said "Ohh... sorry... OK go ahead" and just waved him through. No hay problema.

This happens to my husband too - it happened to my dad a lot too when he was younger (he's Italian). Youssef usually answers in French and says "I don't speak Spanish but do you speak French?". There is a local restaurant in town that he was going to work for until the owner found out he didn't speak a word of Spanish. It was before he had his EAD and they even offered to take him to the local Mexican grocery store to get him a work permit.....argh!!
