The government DOES set MPG standards in the US for NEW cars and that is a good thing. Auto manufacturers would not make these changes if not forced. And we the consumers benefit as a result.

They set fleet averages, so if you sell enough cars that get 35mpg, you can still sell gas guzzlers. I think everyone should drive Smart Cars and Fiat 500's. The other choices serve no purpose.

I never get the History argument, you have to deal with the situation as it is.

It is a numbers issue.

If you let in just 1% of the current US population in every year that would double the US population in less than the lifetime of someone born today.

1% represents 10 days of worldwide population increase. So pretty insignificant.

The US needs to reduce its greenhouse gas production, its carbon foot print, how do you do that by doubling its population?

Some of them are children. Do we punish them because their parents brought them here?

How would we be punishing them? They would be going home with their parents who brought them here illegally. That's the parents fault, not the U.S. govt. There's plenty of US Citizen children paying the price for the mistakes their parents made. Look at all the children with parents in prison. They're being punished for the mistakes of their parents. Should we give them some kind of special break? I mean they live in a 1 parent household through no fault of their own right?

Bottom line, if these kids are in a bad situation, they need to be asking their parents why that is not the U.S. government.

There is no good solution, the discussion is about the least worse.

I could argue that I do not care as I will probably not be around when the really hits the fan, unfortunately that seems to be the common basis of many decisions.
