Can, and do. I don't own what you seem to be wanting to label as "modern assault weapon". But I have guns that are capable of killing just as swiftly as an AR-15, whether it is used in single-shot mode (which most users use) or semi-auto (gets expensive and highly inaccurate real fast). IMO, any weapon pointed at another human is an assault weapon. The outer shell of a weapon is just cosmetics to appeal to our eyes.

Know what the difference is between all these "modern assault weapons"?

Looks and price. They are all .22 cal semi-autos. Capable of wounding and killing people very quickly. OR... capable of creating one of those family bonding moments we spoke about earlier at about the lowest price one can spend on ammo. It's not what's behind the facade of the gun that makes it so deadly, but what is in the heart of the holder...

You would need to check but in many place .22 Rimfires do not get included in the same regulations when talking about assault weapons. There is no common definition of that term, would depend on whatever regulation you were looking at.

Apples and Oranges. Well, Apples and Bicycles really. Not even a close comparison.

A. Australia has no right to bear arms in their constitution. The U.S. does, and most recent challenges to this right have been shot down. Pun intended.

B. Australia doesn't/didn't have a 1 person to 1 firearm ratio like the U.S. does, That's 330 million guns, legal and illegal.

All this talk of banning this firearm or preventing this nut from getting one etc. is all cosmetic (and somewhat entertaining) Nothing will change until A and B above are addressed. Especially A. In order to get the A issue resolved, you need an amendment to the constitution which aint easy and not likely to happen in our lifetime.
