I did a Hunters Safety course, got all the questions right, multiple guess. There were a few nuggets but mostly common sense. There were 7 year olds doing it btw.

What is a 100% background check? You can only check what someone has on file for you which for most people is pretty much nothing of consequence.

I'm a liberal. And an Elite one at that. I own an AR-15. I'm a responsible gun owner and supporter of the Second Amendment. Assault rifles were used in the killing of about 225 people last year. What was the handgun number, about 9000? Now if I was anti gun and wanted to get rid of the guns that are most likely to be used to commit murder, which would I chose, assault rifles or handguns? This kinda reminds me of this:

Yeah but you're not considering irrational hysteria. Which one is scarier?

Or this one:

The first one is quite large and scary, but I'd bet the one on the bottom has killed many more people in the U.S. than the one on the top.

I agree. However I think they need to require a background check on any gun transfer.

Here in Ga if you have a gun permit, you don't have to have a background check. That should be fair enough

Whatever the method, and I am no expert, we need to find a way to cut of the supply of guns to criminals, while not infringing on the constitutional rights of law abiding citizens. If we started the debate with that goal, instead of screaming about ugly guns, we might get somewhere

That is a sucker bet. More people get beat to death every year than killed by what anti-gun people like to call assault weapons

i would be fine with a reasonable way to do 100% back ground checks.

Why bother when they rarely arrest the people trying to buy a gun that shouldn't? Seems they should fix that minor detail before they even start talking about expanding background checks.

and that is exactly what I have been saying . If we want a serious discussion about reducing gun deaths in this country, the other side can not lead with banning funny looking guns, and limiting magazine sizes. All it does is prove to rational gun owners, they don't have a clue and want to push meaningless radical polices down our throat.

i would be fine with a reasonable way to do 100% back ground checks. Also would be ok with a mandatory firearms course to purchase your first weapon.

Here in GA you have to under go a hunting safety course to get a hunting licences and nobody's head exploded.

I think a good training course is great, especially for people who have never used a firearm. It's like learning to drive a car and become a responsible driver. Just because you take driving lessons, you don't suddenly become Mario Andretti. But it is a start and a step in the right direction. Gun owners should know their weapons well. Take the time to learn gun safety and shooting proficiency. And, imagine this, have fun. I've seen lots of people shoot for the first time and I can't recall any who said, this sucks. Not everyone ran out to buy a gun, some never shot again, but at least they gave it a shot. Pun intended. And this includes males and females. If the sport doesn't appeal to you fine. I don't like basket weaving or knitting. But you can bet as soon as someone starts a knitting thread I'm gonna go right in there and shoot knitting down and ridicule them at every opportunity.

That is true, I have been run through the checks quite a few times, not just for guns.

I always thought of it as being pretty tokenistic. If you have some issue in your past then there are other options.

And the checks as I have said are very rudimentary.

I don't know if you recall the video I posted of a friend of our shooting the other day. She loved it. My wife saw me posting the video of a girl in a skimp bikini, and i got in trouble

The handgun has probably killed 100K more in just the last 10 years.

I did see that. I forgot to ask if it was your wife or someone else. I have known several women who shot for the first time and enjoyed it. I had an aunt that shot trap in competition for years. She had a room full of trophies. And her competitive days were back in the 50's, not a lot of women in the sport back then.

Exactly. This is the key point.

LOL no my wife is very conservative, in a behavior kind of way. She would never walk around in that skimpy bikini.

Someone who is not anti-gun but hates to see so many people killed by them, like myself, would opt to lower all gun deaths. It just so happens that the assault weapons were the subject in this thread.

Why do people have German Shepards, Rottweilers or Dobermans for pets? Maybe because they are menacing looking? Or maybe because they like them? Maybe they like to show them? Enjoy interacting with them? Does being shot with a .223 from an AR-15 kill or hurt more than by the exact same round from a Ruger Mini-14? Questions to ponder.

Yes those dogs are menacing looking and that is one of the main reasons for having one. I own a German Shepherd, but I don't make fun of the people who are frightened by them, like some of the gun owners do here to people. I fully admit one of the reasons I got the dog is because Shepherds are good protectors and do give people pause about getting too close to where their shouldn't be. But I also fully understand why some people are frightened and do not like my dog simply because it looks menacing.

Which one is more apt to bite you?

The first one is big and scary, but I'd be willing to bet that the little one has bitten more people. Yet more people are frightened by the first one. You want to call it irrational hysteria, I call it human nature.
