It also gives us the opportunity to bring back alive one of our soldiers, in this case.

Look at it from a standpoint of cold numbers though: I've read reports that anywhere from 5 to 8 US servicemen have lost their lives looking for this guy. Plus, the five released Taliban kingpins have sworn to return to the battlefield, surely costing still more lives. From this (or any!) perspective, it doesn't "add up" to a win.

Folks, there is a lot to this whole episode — like Benghazi — that we may never know. And this is not conspiracy theory, it is truth based upon Arabic and Islamic dogma and tradition.

He had other ways out besides deserting. Poor choice on his part, maybe a dangerous precedent on the part of the US. I'm sure the soldiers family is relieved as he is, but there are always consequences for our actions.

It seems to me by the above posts that a few soldiers lost their lives because of this guy's willful actions. Now add to that this "prisoner swap" for militants who will surely go back to Afghanistan and do their best to kill more soldiers. They have a one year travel ban from travel out of Qatar, which is pretty laughable. Add to that Obama's end around with Congress.

I sincerely hope there's more to this story, because on the surface this looks like one of the biggest presidential blunders that I can recall.

It does look like a big blunder on the surface. But I won't be surprised if there is no more to the story. Did this soldier aid and abet the enemy? Did he desert? Two huge key points, IMO. The released enemy prisoners will do their best and will probably succeed in killing more people. It's like selling all of our old, dirty, polluting power plants to Central American countries. Ditto for the old trucks and buses. They suddenly become environmentally friendly in a third world country? Or, now they won't be directly polluting in the US? Problem not solved in either case.

I would say dishonorable discharge and military jail time appropriate to the crime. You know, whatever they normally do over the last 15 years or so.
