POINT OF ENTRY (POE) WHAT HAPPENS???

K1s have the ability to get an EAD upon activation at a POE, but that is only if the person processing their K1 decides to give it to them. It's been known that JFK will give one and a few other POEs, but not all of them.

AFAIK, most employers will not employ you without an EAD regardless of if you have an SSN.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it was my understanding that JFK was the only point-of-entry that handed out EAD's and even then, it wasn't an "everyday thing."

Regardless, as I understand it, the EAD one receives at their POE from JFK is rather limited in its scope and abilities.

There is some substantial debate on the EAD issue over in the "Working & Traveling prior to receiving Green Card" forum.

It seems that a K1 technically allows one to work but without the stamp it can get tricky to prove when filling out an I-9 for an employer. That's just what I got from sifting through all the posts on the subject.

I agree with this. While Craig and I had a pretty nasty border experience, I'd never take this step to judge the CBP guards. They are protecting our country and doing the best they can to make quick, intelligent, on-the-spot decisions. I think as Americans and Canadians, we are used to having our unalienable rights at all times. And it's hard for us to grasp that when trying to enter another country, those rights aren't valid anymore.

Anyways, I definitely wouldn't want the CBP guard job. I mean, the guard that denied Craig entry, while pretty cruel during the denial, was very accommodating and explainitive to me when I came back through the next day. He even made sure to discuss the situation with me and offer me suggestions (he's the one that first told us about the K1!). I think the toughness is a part of the job that is necessary to keep the bad 'uns out of the country. And, you know, if some of the good 'uns get caught up in the net to catch the bad guys, then I'm okay with it. I rather it be that way around then some of the bad ones slipping through the cracks. Even if that means my baby couldn't visit me. :P

My two cents.

Typical idiocy and incompetency. The USCIS quite obviously puts the bottom-feeders on border duty.

Your continued arrogance with respect to the CBP astounds me... You have no idea what goes on there or what the CBP has to go through every day... At a busy POE like the Peace Bridge, you are a minor insignificant piece of what goes on there...

Are you saying that I'm the bottom of the pack.. that I am insignificant.... I probably have more college degrees than you do... hell.. they guy who processed your paperwork may have had a law degree... there's lots of those people on the line...

Save your snide comments to yourself...

I thought it was only JFK too but in another thread recently (can't remember where) someone said they got one in Detroit I think. And you're right, someone may or may not still get one at JFK even if they ask for it.
