AOS- Request for more information regarding Birth Certificate

We just had our interview for a Green Card. Everything went well overall but we have been asked to provide information about one of the names listed on my husband's birth certificate. He is from Haiti- and the person in question appears to be a witness, attesting to his birth.

Has anyone been asked to provide additional information about a witness on a birth certificate?

We already know that the individual is not a relative- and my husband's parents have been deceased for over 20 years, so we can't ask them. We assume it was a worker in the civil office- but this was written over 30 years ago, so it would be very difficult to track down that information now.

Any advice as to how to articulate an answer for the immigration officer?

Thank you!

Try this. and also read this http://www.refworld.org/docid/485ba863c.html

1. Contact your local Consulate General of Haiti or Haitian Consul in your state. Currently there are Haitian Consuls located in Washington, D.C., Miami, Chicago, Boston and New York City. A certified copy of a birth certificate from Haiti will cost up to $120. Read more: http://www.ehow.com/how_7695675_obtain-birth-certificate-haiti.html#ixzz33JHaGZcJ

2. Contact the Haitian National Archives in Haiti. You can visit its website; a link to the site is provided in this article's Resources section. You can fill out the form online or call 509-2221-0292 to speak to a representative. That's a Haitian phone number; you'll need to dial proper international codes if you're calling from outside Haiti.

3. Contact the Embassy of Haiti's Consular section in Washington at 202-332-4090. You can also e-mail the office at embassy@haiti.org. One of the many services they offer is copies of birth certificates.

Thank you for the information. Yes- we have obtained a new birth certificate from Archives (they are good for 10 years at a time). My question is more about providing explanation as to the witnesses named within the document. This seems like an odd question from the immigration officer, and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced that and how they handled it.

Thanks again!

I would basically write a letter and get it notarized explaining exactly what the situation is. It is very odd. Hope it was worked out!

Thanks! His new birth certificate just arrived yesterday and we got it translated today at rev.com. I sent the affidavit to the lawyer to review- before we get it notarized. Hoping what we provided will be sufficient. It does seem very strange.....
