Having been born in Liverpool , brought up just out Manchester , gone to college in the Black Country and then lived and worked in Lahndan I get it all :-)

HAHA my husband is from west Lancs and so many people think he and his family are Aussies. We were walking to a bar one night and some random guy walked by and said "g'day mates" and they were like uhhhh...wrong country! I did discover that the accent is very useful when you want good service. Every time we go out and have a female server or bartender, I make them ask for everything as they tend to get far better service than I get when asking for the same thing. Yep, I totally send the shy english guy to flirt with the bartender to get stronger drinks hah!

My favorite things to make Alan say are "bear, there, wear..." They just sound like "brrr, werrr, herr" and are adorable. I threaten that if he loses the accent, he'll get shipped back to the UK for a bt. He's not moved here yet but is already so Americanized. regularly says trunk for boot/ hood for bonnet, cell phone, garage, not gar-age, and the best is that he's picked up my new england quirk of saying "wicked" all the time, oh and "dude" which sounds hilarious with his accent

Being Belgian, but having been taught UK english in high school, and then doing a Master's at University of London, and having tons of UK friends, does make for an interesting mix of british and US english

Sentences like "How are y'all tonight, I'm gonna grab a beer cause i'm properly knackered", with the latter part pronounced as it should, makes perfect sense to me but still cracks the missus up ;-)

Seems there's also a difference between yard and garden?

My Liverpudlian origins surface when I say fair and hair. They both sound like fur and hur. As for my adoption of US English I don't really bother unless I really need to make myself understood. I will call things by their Murican names if I want to buy something but I have no plans to start saying booee ,rowt or tomayto. I can perfectly well understand Americans when I'm back in Blighty.

I mean I have a neighbour who always give me advice on pier blight on my pear tree ...
