UK embassy apologises for 'burning White House' tweet
_77161470_77157674.jpgThe controversial tweet was posted on Sunday

The British embassy in Washington has apologised after tweeting a picture of a White House cake surrounded by sparklers, "commemorating" the burning of the building 200 years ago.

The US presidential residence was set on fire by British forces in 1814 during the "War of 1812" with the United States.

A number of Twitter users said the embassy's tweet was "in poor taste".

The embassy later said: "Apologies for earlier Tweet."

It added: "We meant to mark an event in history & celebrate our strong friendship today."

'Only sparklers!'

British troops led by Maj Gen Robert Ross, from Northern Ireland, attacked and burned public buildings including the Capitol, Washington Navy Yard and the president's mansion during the conflict.

It is the only time since the American Revolutionary War that a foreign power has captured and occupied Washington.

The offending tweet on Sunday read: "Commemorating the 200th anniversary of burning the White House. Only sparklers this time!"

The British embassy message, published on its official Twitter account, has been retweeted more than 4,000 times.

One user questioned: "Is this suppose [sic] to be funny"?

Another wrote: "I think this is in extremely POOR TASTE."

An apology was issued on the account two hours after the original message.

My response at work was, "Well, you started it!" :P

Seriously, of all the things to get snarky about, this has to be one of the lamest. They got a spiffy new White House out of it, what can there be to b!tch about?

There is one thing wrong with this. Northern Ireland didn't exist in 1814.

I was going to work the White House cake story into a blog article so I did a bit of internet research into Anglo American relations and found some really interesting facts. Apparently we nearly fought a war in 1859 over an Irishman's pig that ate some potatoes. Google Pig War 1859 if you don't believe me! Just thought I'd share that as it's not very well known and it's a funny story!

I'm going to blog about my first "fall" in the US soon and I was wondering what do my fellow British expats think about fall? Do you refuse to accept the word and use autumn or have you been cowed into using fall? The weirdest word for autumn I have heard so far in New England is "leaf peeping season" which sounds a little perverse!

Hi Hotter Otter! Nice to hear from you - how have you been?

In a sense, I think it's a rather simplistic term - it's kind of like calling summer just "Hot". I wouldn't consciously use it, but I can imagine it slipping out the more I become acclimatised to my new country.

Can I get a link to your blog please? I've started my own long distance relationship blog - the link is in my sig.

Now chronicling my experience in handy blog format at

I've been good thanks, adjusting to life in the US! Just had a read through your blog, it's good and lots of helpful tips for people who find themselves in the same situation we did! There's a surprising amount of UK CR1 filers who have blogs, it's really interesting to see how different couples found the process and dealt with the wait. My blog is linked in my signature too :)

Leaf Peeping Season is when the sea of green that is the trees in the North East suddenly goes bonkers, turning red, orange, yellow, brown and any other colour you might think of. Given the large number of trees, it's quite spectacular.

Then they all fall off. :(

As for what I call it, I like to "keep the British end up" and stick with Autumn. Drives people batty. :hehe:

And the tourists that travel to the NE especially to see the beautiful fall colors are called 'leaf peepers'! I've been one myself - it really is beautiful, i'd never seen anything like it before.

That said, most of the people I'm acquainted with here use Autumn as much as Fall, it seems interchangeable for them.

Having lived in Maine and had occasion to travel to Vermont and the shores of Lake Champlain, autumn was the best time to make that drive, as it was just one amazing display of colour, all the way.

Unless it was raining. I once had a 300 mile non-stop car wash doing that trip. :(

Well I am ready to go to Vermont, Pooky. We don't have seasonal colors in my part of Texas. Maybe the occasional one off tree. I want to see a blaze of fall color or autumn colour.

Went for a drive upstate today. Simply awesome. The mountains, the colours, the sunshine and the fresh, non-city air were all just perfect.
