Update on the hiring process!

So, last Monday we had a new guy come in to start work in the position. Smart, older, experienced in working in a law firm (had even been a paralegal and did a couple of years of law school). Hooray! I like him and he asks all sorts of good and probing questions. Old guy gets interviews to work elsewhere (one of these has worked out -- he's starting on Thursday doing what he does here but with a reduced salary).

Wednesday morning, I come in at 9:15 and I'm the first one here. Huh. Old guy and new guy should be here already, but I figure they're at the bank, so new guy can meet our relationship manager. Boss comes in -- "Where's new guy and old guy?" I say the bank, probably. 10 am, old guy walks in, on his own. "Where's new guy?" Dunno -- shouldn't he be here?

Fast forward six hours. We have called this guy five times, sent multiple emails and texts. Nothing. We got the recruitment agency to follow up. They called him 12 times on two different numbers, send tons of email. Nothing. It's like he dropped off the face of the earth.

Thursday: no show. I'm rebooting the ad for the job. Friday: no show. I get a ton of unsuitable candidates, plus one guy who might be okay (he's interviewing tomorrow). Monday: new guy calls my boss. He's sorry, but his elderly mother had a stroke on Tuesday night. We're all sympathetic here, but who the eff NEVER CALLS WORK to say that? My boss would have held the job for him had he just picked up the phone, or sent an email. I was in a bad car accident one week into starting here, and had to miss two days of work. My boss said rest, get better. But I called.

Just amazing. I guess this means the job market is doing great if people feel they can just walk away without explanation. :ranting:

At least you found out about him early.

I once had a secretary (whom I was pushed to hire, against my instincts) walk off without notice halfway through her first day. We scoured the area for her and were about to call the police. I finally managed to reach her mother, who matter-of-factly said, "Oh, yes; she does that."

Been there done that. I have learned to always expect the unexpected from people. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Had one guy come in for 2nd interview on a Friday, we agreed to terms and his start day was to be Monday seeing he was currently unemployed and didn't need to leave any notice with a current employer. I walked him around and showed him some things so he'd be comfortable when he came in on Monday. We shook hands and he said "See you Monday". Monday morning comes and no new guy. I wait til 9am and give him a call, straight to voice mail. Try again at noon and at 4pm, same result. Tuesday morning comes, still no new guy. I remembered he said he lived with his Mother and he had left her number on the job application as an emergency contact. I figured I'd call to see if this guy was still alive. When the Mother answered the phone and I explained what happened with her son, she told me to stop bothering her and that if her son wanted to work for us he'd call us. I shook my head and said "well alrighty then, you have a great day ma'am".

I've had two other guys just disappear within their first week. One guy went to lunch and never came back. The other guy said he had a stomach ache and needed to go to the bathroom, that was the last time I saw him.

I've had to fire a couple guys that had a habit of pullin the "no show no call" as well. They would simply walk in the next day like nothing ever happened. They were both given warnings and proceeded to do it again. One of them was out for 2 days and just walked right in like he was never out.

Personnel activities would be great if only it weren't for the people.

Irresponsibility, disrespect, and disregard are among the most distasteful of attitudes, in the workplace or in life.

  • 2 weeks later...

The RUBbers have had their revenge on me -- our new employee thinks that American women are entitled and expect men to bring home the bacon, fry it up in the pan and massage the CABA's tootsies as she eats bon-bons on her chaise longue after a short day at her little job.:rolleyes:

I am being polite and kind but firm in my responses to him. I've also had to tell him once now that some of these discussions are inappropriate in our workplace (like CABAs = DOOOOOM). He's used to working in nearly all-male environments, and from what he's told me of his relationship past, he's tended to choose him some grade-A CABA AND RUB golddiggers. Ultimately, though, I do rank higher than him in this office, and if I don't want to discuss power dynamics between the sexes at work, I don't have to. :)

Also, who tells his female American superior that US ladies be greedy? L'wow. I was slightly taken aback. On VJ is one thing, but in my own office? Errrrr, nope. Sorry. Happy to talk movies, books, TV, travel plans, restaurants, etc. but sex and politics are just too problematic in an office this small.

I have officially surpassed the 30lb weight loss I wanted to achieve by July 1st way ahead of schedule, and Wifey has lost 25lbs. I now fit comfortably into my speedo! We are going out for pizza tomorrow night at Santarpios to celebrate!
