I wish I would have found this before the weekend to give Teddy and any other New Englander's a heads up. There is an exhibition of WWII planes making the rounds. I went to see them today here in MA. They had a P-51 Mustang, a B-24 Liberator and a B-17 Flying Fortress. Not many flying example of either bombers remain. There was a good turnout of all ages. You could tour the aircraft and take pictures. You could also go for a flight too, $450 for a 1/2 trip in either of the bombers. The P-51 is the only dual control version of this fighter. They will visit CT, NY, NJ and MD in the next couple of weeks. I highly recommend checking them out if they make a stop in your area..

There are still a few more stops here in MA.

The B-17 was round this way for a week, a few weeks back, doing the ride-alongs. The better half asked if I'd like to, but I declined. Now if it was the P-51, it would have been a different answer. ;)

The P-51 was $2200 for 1/2 hour and $3200 for an hour and you got to take the controls. I am really glad I caught this event. It was so cool watching the bombers take off and land, standing behind them as they fired up each engine one by one. I think it would have been neat to see an F-22 and a B-2 along with the WWII planes. It would be something to see the change in technology side by side.

Having jets alongside the WWII aircraft doesn't work for me.

And many American shows restrict the historic aircraft to fly pasts, without letting them put on a display. There are a few that let the pilots show what they can do with these pieces of history and I hope to catch a couple sometime. But they appear to be few and far between.

What sets WWII aircraft apart is the sound. Piston engines have soul, the sounds they make add to the character of the aircraft. I will freely admit to being biased, but there is no sound to compare to a Merlin at full throttle. Yet a Merlin in a Spitfire sounds different to one in a Mustang. But a jet is just noise, in most cases. With one exception ...
