Yes the crate teaches boundaries and is mostly for house training. Dogs will not soil the area they sleep in, so keeping him in the crate at night and when we're not home will teach him not to go the bathroom in the house. As soon as we let him out of the crate he goes outside, goes to the bathroom and gets a treat along with a bunch of praise. He's learning really quickly too. He already goes to the back door and barks when he has to go the bathroom. The crate is also his "safe place" so to speak. We leave the door open at all times and he goes in there on his own if he gets nervous or just wants to rest or sleep.

Yes horses are different that way. I've owned four dogs in my life and crate training is the easiest and fastest way to house train a dog.

We take Dex out for a little walk every night now after work. He gets so excited and expends so much energy that when we get back to our house, he flops down in the front lawn and just lays there.

Sounds like you are training him well.

A close friend of mine, had a dog like yours, and took the dog for daily walks, put the dog in a crib at nights etc. However the dog realised this person was weak, and constantly bit him. My friend gave the dog up. What a waste.

Sounds like that dog had dominance aggression. That doesn't mean it's a bad dog, but those types of dogs need more training and discipline to enforce who is in charge. Even my new pup tries to push the limits to see what he can get away with. He gives my hand a nibble every now and then to test me. They need to be told no sternly and ignoring them completely when they act up is a great way to break the bad behavior.

Very true. The problem lay with the owner. He had a monkey before that -gave him champagne when we were drinking it , so the monkey wouldn't feel left out etc. Monkey died from diabetes and I was the one that had to take it to be cremated and pick up the bones left after the cremation with chopsticks and put them in an urn.

Well, all looks well in your case. Don't worry about it, and enjoy your new addition to the family.

Just as background , this was in Japan. After a body is cremated it is traditional for relatives of the deceased to pick up the remaining bones with chopsticks , pass them to someone else , and they are deposited into an urn. Edited September 30, 2015 by Jacque67

Nope, that's how our puppy Dex fell asleep in his crate the other day. He plays hard and then he crashes, lol.

This pic was yesterday at 10 weeks old. He's gotten so big so quick.

Thanks Operator! You've got the puppy breath and sharp teeth part exactly right. I can deal with the puppy breath no problem, but I'll be happy when the puppy teeth are gone. He's doing really good with the chewing, he mostly chews his toys and not the furniture. Every once in a while he mistakes my hand for a toy and gives me a good nibble though. When he does I give his nose a little flick with my finger and he stops. Last night he got my toes, the lil #######.

He uses the crate as his little home. We leave the door open all the time and he goes in and out as he pleases. He hordes his toys in there too. He's got no fear either, he goes after our 8 year old German Shepherd with gusto. Thankfully the Shepherd is fairly tolerant of his playfulness, but it will be better once Dex gets a little bigger and stronger so he can handle himself a bit better.
