HELLO VJR'S,

I SEE THAT TRAVELING IS PERMITTED ONCE YOU RECEIVE YOUR GREEN CARD... SO JUST TO CLARIFY, WE ARE GOING TO A WEDDING IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN OCTOBER FOR A WEEK, AND I AM A US CITIZEN OBVIOUSLY WITH A US PASSPORT, BUT MY HUSBAND IS MEXICAN WITH A MEXICAN PASSPORT AND A US GREEN CARD :dancing: . I WOULD ASSUME HE WOULD USE HIS MEXICAN PASSPORT TO ENTER THE DR, BUT THEN HIS GREEN CARD TO ENTER BACK INTO THE US CORRECT? IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF OR PREPARE FOR? HE HASN'T LEFT THE COUNTRY SINCE HE'S GOTTEN HIS GREEN CARD, SO WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE WE'RE PREPARED SINCE OUR BEST FRIENDS ARE GETTING MARRIED (L) , AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE CAN GET THERE ON TIME AND HOME ON TIME. THANKS SO MUCH! APPRECIATE YOUR HELP! :D

My wife and I just returned from the Dominican Republic (DR). My wife has her green card and a Korean passport. She needed to present both when we checked in at the airport and check in our luggage. When we entered the DR, the customs/immigration officer also wanted to see both her green card and passport. When we checked in for the return flight, the person checking us in wanted to see both. Finally, when we returned to US soil, the CBP officer wanted to see both her green card and passport.

This probably does not apply to your husband (assuming his name is identical on his green card and Mexican passport)...but one detail that may help others. My wife's maiden name is on her passport and that name matched the name on her flight ticket. Her green card has her first name and my last name. After reading posts on this website, I carried a certified copy of our marriage certificate as her last names on her green card and passport did not match. Nobody at any point in our travels asked for the marriage certificate to reconcile the difference in her last name on those documents. It made sense to them that she had taken my last name for her green card. Since this was our first time traveling outside the USA, I was worried about the DR officials not being experienced with this issue and giving us trouble...but everything went even more smoothly tham expected. We will still carry our marriage certificate when we travel abroad...who knows what kind of idiots we may encounter in the future.

You should have no issues. If flying, he can even use the citizen's lane in the airport. Green card is proof of permanent residence and they do not ask any questions. Show both the Mexican passport and the green card. If the names are different on the passport and green card, make sure to have proof of name change.

Thank you. We plan on brining both and my husbands name is the same on the GC and passport even though his has the double last name. He wanted to change his last name and drop the maiden name cause his name is now different in Mexico and the U.S., but they said he couldn't until he was a citizen... so no name change for him! Thanks for the details though. He was a little nervous about there being issues! :dancing:
