It would be offensive if someone purposely said it that way. It was obvious you didn't but had heard it said that way.

What is an article? Basically, an article is an adjective. Like adjectives, articles modify nouns.

English has two articles: the and a/an. The is used to refer to specific or particular nouns; a/an is used to modify non-specific or non-particular nouns. We call the the definite article and a/an the indefinite article.

the = definite article

a/an = indefinite article

For example, if I say, "Let's read the book," I mean a specific book. If I say, "Let's read a book," I mean any book rather than a specific book.

Here's another way to explain it: The is used to refer to a specific or particular member of a group. For example, "I just saw the most popular movie of the year." There are many movies, but only one particular movie is the most popular. Therefore, we use the.

"My daughter really wants a dog for Christmas." This refers to any dog. We don't know which dog because we haven't found the dog yet.

  • "Somebody call a policeman!" This refers to any policeman. We don't need a specific policeman; we need any policeman who is available.

seriously, you're going to keep running into these 'i didn't know moments' as long as you can't figure out why such a term is offensive to some people. if someone called me 'a white' i wouldn't be offended, because that's stupid.

well then society is never going to move forward unless we can reach a point of equality . If saying "a White, A Philippina, A mexican, etc" is not offensive then saying A black should not be either

Everybody being so damn sensitive is most of the issue

No problem. Just go back and fire your English teacher. hehehe

I agree it shouldn't be offensive to say a black, however, when people use words negatively, profusely, it puts the words on the no no list.

There are many who do not like to be called a mestizo, mulatto, etc. it is because of the weight the words now carry.

Sorry man.

I know what you meant NB by your statement. However, they are educating you -- it was the context. Such context has been used to demean and/or to imply condescension.

Hope that helps.

Hey guys, is "black" a country?

KqNwhJB.gif
I knew a guy that got a map of the world tattooed on his back minus Africa because he "refused to recognize it". And before you guys chaulk that up to being a Kentuckian, note the guy was Canadian. He also smoked cigars and blew the smoke in everyone's face. Like, swisher sweet cigars. Classy yo.
