How Does A K-1 Get SSN?

Can someone please tell me how to obtain my SSN? I am a K-1 visa holder about to submit my AOS but I heard somewhere that you can get your SSN even before getting the green card. Can some one explain this to me please.

If your I94 is not expired, you go to the SS office with your passport and apply for it.

Thanks for your response. How do I know if my i94 is still valid? Is it the 3 months stamp on my visa?

We got it before filing AOS. As long as you go get it before the K-1 visa expires... it will likely have "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" on it. That's ok because at least you will have it so that as soon as you get the EAD, can start applying for jobs. Otherwise, if K-1 date has passed, then you will have to wait to apply for SSN until after you EAD, then get state ID/DL and then can apply for SSN. Once you get GC, you can go to SSN office to get the "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization" removed. Good luck.

The K1 expired the minute you entered the country. To obtain an SSN you need to have at least 15 days left on your I94. If it's more than 90 days since you entered the USA the I94 will have expired and you will need to wait for either EAD or green card to obtain SSN.
