Hmm.. Is that so? We got married civilly here in the US and planning to do a catholic wedding at home for formality purposes. That's a no?

THAT is what I and others have been trying to tell you for some time now.... aint' happening.

1st off you are already married, so you can not get a marriage license and get married in the Phils ... "been there done that" already in the USA.

Catholic church is a real ####### on this.. you are not going to get "re-married" in a catholic church.. only know this from many, many postings here in the forum.

To clarify, there are two issues here:

1. The Catholic church may not allow you to do a ceremony for "show"

2. If you do a ceremony for "show" then no official paperwork can be involved, it doesn't prevent you from repeating your vows and having whatever party after that you want, you just can't do the license/certificate again, however you may be able to get an unofficial certificate that isn't legally binding. I am not clear whether the vows need to be worded as a reaffirmation or not though.

It's not for show. We jus want a church wedding. This issue only applies to the church right? It does not affect our application to the USCIS? That's my main concern. Churches in the Philippines allow people to do a "church wedding."

You are already married.... doesn't matter if a person gets married HK or Singapore or where ever... married is married... can't do it twice.

Churches do church wedding but ... YOU ARE ALREADY MARRIED!!

I get your point.

I wouldn't do it twice if I had the choice. It was our family, really.

My concern is, would that affect our USCIS AOS application?

In reality you don't have a choice - you are ALREADY married. .Educate your family- No Catholic church wedding.

Don't know that it will affect AOS... but I can see it coming back to bite you right where you sit.. and I bet it won't be that far down the road

- I'm done... my head hurts.

What he is saying is you can't do an actual wedding. And if you are catholic you won't be doing it in a church either.

As for when will a government document arrive.... no one knows.

I get what you're saying. We cannot do the licensing in the philippines cause that would mean getting married twice. BUT we can do the ceremony in the philippines.

Yes you can do a ceremony, no issue doing that. But the Catholic church isn't going to go along with that... that has been a topic here on the forum a few different times, the church will not do it.

Just a side note - there are plenty of countries in which the Church does not have the power to marry someone legally, so people get married at the Court House, then do the church wedding (which can only be performed if they show their marriage certificate and proof that they are already legally married by the state).

I was just about to say that. Poland is an example of such. People actually do get married in the court first (and have a small party) and then few days or weeks later they get married in church and have a big wedding after (usually). So I think the question is does church in Phillipiness does legal marriages or not.. And even if it does maybe the priests would show compassion and understand OP's situation and let them have church, religous wedding.

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.
