Anyone here know HOME NETWORKING?

I have now joined the new millenium and we got us INTERNET SATELLITE after only having DIALUP available to us out here in the boonies...lol

YEEEE HAWWWWW I got me some SPEEEEEEEEED...it's so awesome, I feel like a kid in a candy shop!

So, Rick got us satellite internet...but he had it installed on on our main PC that's in the living room. I also have my old computer sitting in the back spare room that I use mostly for my music downloads and for Alli to do her school work and projects on.

Yesterday, we got this bright idea that hell, we can just get a router and cables and an ethernet card and hook my old computer up to satellite net too!

Well....we hooked it all up (hardwire not wireless) and we're pretty sure it's all hooked up right too...but it's not working. :-(

Now there is ONE thing that I discovered by reading the box the router came in - you know where computer stuff always has those "minimum requirements"? It says the computer must have at least Windows XP on it or Windows 2000 SP4 (whatever that is...lol), well my PC is old as I said, and it has Windows ME on it...do you think that might cause the prob with the router? If I install Windows XP, think it'll help?

Anyone?

I REALLY would like to have satellite net on the old PC too, especially since we will cancel the old dialup connection of course and that will mean that I'll have NO internet at all on my old computer.

All input is appreciated, thanks!

Have you gone through the Network Setup Wizard on each machine to establish the protocol and sharing capabilities?

YMMV

I think that is why she is having problems. ME does not have that wizard.(I think). You should really upgrade the host computer and everything should work. I had sattalite internet before and did the router bit. Once you run the wizard on both computers it will work.

All the old PC will need is a network card and eithernet cable to plug it into your router. The old computer probably does not have a network card, it probbably only has a modem.

A trip to your local computer store for a net card, they sell for no more than $20

Windows ME works fine with broadband internet, and is pre configured to work with high speed connections, just needs an Ethernet card.

well if the old computer does not met the min. requirments for OS and Memory it wont work. I would just use that computer that has the computer and internet hooked up and get VISTA at the end of this month. .Microsoft is releasing ( supposed to ) On Jan 31.

Also get the Network card also.

The first I would advise you to do is try to setup the internet on your old computer alone and let us not worry about using the router or the other new computer for now.

Assuming the old computer has an ethernet card in it (if not install one), you would need to connect it directly to the modem of your satellite internet, so basically the cable that is comming from the satellite that you used to connect to your new computer you would connect it directly to your old computer. now double click on internet explorer and see if you can get on the internet, if so, than all you need to do next is connect this cable you just used and plug it in the back of your router where it says "WAN", and then you would connect 2 cables from one of the four plugs on the back of the router where it says "LAN" and each goes in an ethernet card of each of the computers and you should have two working computers.

now if when you connected your old computer directly to the satellite internet and it did not work, then you would need to setup the internet on the old computer and you do that by clicking on "Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Internet Connection( or new connection wizard or something like that). and then open internet explorer and see if you can get on the internet. if so, then connect the 2 computers to the internet like indicated above.

i hope this fixes your problem.

Try to stay away from wireless internet..people can tap into your network and they can access internet that way or worse, they can access your computer. Your wireless router is basically transmitting signals anyone can pick up..do more reserach on this before you get going

Thank you all for your replies.

We had already installed the ethernet card on my old computer and we know it was done properly because it shows on my computer for the internet connection. By the way, yes Windows ME DOES have the home network wizard and it helped tremendously, thank you.

Unfortunately we still can't connect the stupid thing to the satellite internet tho. It's showing that our particular satellite modem has a damn built in router and so we must change the ISP # in order to use the router, We have telephoned our ISP and explained the prob - they, of course, told us to telephone the ROUTER company...which we were on "hold" with for 45 minutes before we hung up.

If anyone knows what our next step should be...lol..feel free to contribute. I'll keep you posted. We'll try again after dinner.

By the way, Matako - if you'd read my initial post, I had said that we went "hard-wire NOT wireless"...aware that anyone can simply pick up our internet or hack into our PC's and we weren't having any of that.
