Hello,

I am at the beginning stages of my K-1 visa. Something I am struggling to find info on is my pet newts. I have two fire-belly newts age ~14 and 17. I did a little Google search and on VJ and there is very little on bringing pets to the US that are not the 'normal' cats, dogs, etc.

The only info I see online is that I need to have a vet sign off on a clean bill of health and I am not sure how that will work for this type of animal. As far as I know, there are not required vaccinations and no public health risks.

Has anyone been able to bring a newt or a similar pet (small amphibian or reptile)? I'd like to know of other's experience and any info or links to possible info would be appreciated.

I am working on finding a local vet that can provide some advice and will update on here if I find anything.

Thanks!

Lol, every time I speak of my newts, someone brings up Monty Python. I can't even get mad because what a genius skit :)

I will take a look at these and see what I can do. Will be tricky if I fly there because they require water to travel, but I am considering driving.

Thanks

And I assure you that my newts are much better pets than Newt Gingrich.

Just in case anyone ever comes across this looking for similar info:

I emailed CBP and inquired about newts. Here is what they said:

The newts do not appear to be an endangered species, so you can bring them to the US. They may be inspected by US Fish & Wildlife, and it would be good to fill out a Form 3-177. For more information you should contact the CBP border port or pre-clearance location where you will be checked. I am sorry we were not able to respond to your question sooner, but I hope this helps.

Mark

I am not going to call my POE until I have my visa and firm plans set (Not sure if I am flying or driving yet), but will update again if I get more info.. At least this is a decent sign that they can come with me!
