LAHORE: A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her family outside the Lahore High Court on Tuesday in a so-called “honour” killing for marrying the man she loved, police said.

Farzana Iqbal was waiting for the High Court in Lahore to open when a group of around dozen men began attacking her with bricks, said Umer Cheema, a senior police officer.

Her father, two brothers and former fiance were among the attackers, he said. Iqbal suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.

All the suspects except her father escaped. He admitted killing his daughter, Cheema said, and explained it was a matter of honour.

Cheema said Farzana had been engaged to her cousin but married another man. Her family registered a kidnapping case against him but Farzana had come to court to argue that she had married of her own free will, he said.

Arranged marriages are the norm among conservative Pakistanis, who view marriage for love as a transgression.

Around 1,000 Pakistani women are killed every year by their families in honour killings, according to Pakistani rights group the Aurat Foundation.

The true figure is probably many times higher since the Aurat Foundation only compiles figures from newspaper reports.

I just don't get it. It has nothing to do with religion and more to do with control and oppression or women.

It has everything to do with dogmatic religion.

Seldom do these articles start with "a group of agnostics stoned to death a woman..."

This is true, but there are plenty of religious people who are not out stoning, condemning and eye for eying people.

To be sure, but it is much easier to hide it under the ruse of religion to attempt to make it justifiable.

I agree. It is easier to say in the name of "whatever" to do bad things.

And these are pretend, religious people.

It has everything to do with dogmatic religion.

Not entirely accurate.

The thing is that when you claim, albeit falsely, to be doing something on behalf of god, all bets are off. Haw can anyone question the authority of god? The problem is that most, if not all people who do anything on behalf of god, are unable to produce any proxy.

Of course. They just produce whatever their interpretation of the document is as evidence.

True.. I don't know how to separate out those people that abuse the intrinsic authority/advantages that following the religion as practiced gives them (in this case of men over the women on their lives) without defanging the religion itself.. Do we just accept a certain percentage are going to fall victim to this and write it up as the being the nature of the beast? It is an honest question....

You are correct. It is very hard to distinguish between those who will inherently abuse the authority of a religious document. There is no true way to sift through these people.

What do you do when the government and the religion has meshed together to form one body? This is true for this situation and it is unfortunate. The government should not have the power to impose what they believe to be their religious doctrines laws against a civilian.

Ok to be fair it was the product of Dogmatic religion, swirled with lack of education and evolution

Seventh century mindset.
