How about Indians?? The end of the story for that previous company trying to balance the books was that they one day fired the entire 1000+ IT staff in one swoop and moved the jobs overseas. Problem solved.

Well, we can only hope the male/female ratio was relatively even.

Whew! It took me a while to catch up on what I missed. However, it looks like I am in agreement with most of what Val erie has said.

Kudos for knowing your stuff and seeing both sides of the picture and understanding the uniqueness and complexity of the system that was created in America.

There is no easy way to undo the things that have been done. I like to think of life in America as a relationship. Once you have done something wrong, broken the trust, it is hard to gain that trust back in the relationship. Sometimes the trust can never come back. How do you fix a relationship with no trust?

As a hiring manager I was never told to hire white men.. I was however told to seek out and hire women, and I was told to fast track them into management positions. I was not allowed to *not* give an interview to any women that applied... and when the occasional black male applied and came in for an interview I had to give a detailed explanation if I hired a white male over him. My superiors hem and hawed if I tried to promote a white male but did cartwheels and added it to power point presentations when I promoted women. All this despite the fact that my area was the only IT area in the company with more women than men.

Our board at one point (a fortune 500 company) was 58% female and launched a program to try and attract more women to the board as part of an overall diversity program. All women that join IT in this company are assigned a mentor to help guide them.

As a male I had to do considerably more to get the same promotion opportunities as women in my company or at least hope there were no women qualified for the job I was seeking. Several times I had to threaten to quit (and one time walk out the door) to get a position that had been left open for an extended period looking for a "qualified" person. If I had been a female I have no-doubt I could have ended up as president (well.. an exec) of the company.

That is your white male privilege we keep hearing about

i'm raising a white male. he's got plenty of obstacles to overcome. he doesn't have a golden ticket to life because he's white and male. just because i recognize white privilege and white male privilege for the reality that it is, doesn't mean that i'm putting white people or white men down.

yeah, reality is pretty damn unfortunate.

Telling me that because I am white and Male some top secret grand puh bah free pass exists for me, and lumping all in one big group is bigoted and racist.

it isn't a free pass, you have a tendency to oversimplify. i can do that too. i acknowlede my own privilege therefore, i hate myself. too bad i don't tan, maybe if i get enough freckles...
