As a hiring manager I was never told to hire white men.. I was however told to seek out and hire women, and I was told to fast track them into management positions. I was not allowed to *not* give an interview to any women that applied... and when the occasional black male applied and came in for an interview I had to give a detailed explanation if I hired a white male over him. My superiors hem and hawed if I tried to promote a white male but did cartwheels and added it to power point presentations when I promoted women. All this despite the fact that my area was the only IT area in the company with more women than men.

Our board at one point (a fortune 500 company) was 58% female and launched a program to try and attract more women to the board as part of an overall diversity program. All women that join IT in this company are assigned a mentor to help guide them.

As a male I had to do considerably more to get the same promotion opportunities as women in my company or at least hope there were no women qualified for the job I was seeking. Several times I had to threaten to quit (and one time walk out the door) to get a position that had been left open for an extended period looking for a "qualified" person. If I had been a female I have no-doubt I could have ended up as president (well.. an exec) of the company.

That's because racial minorities and women have been discriminated against for years. It's payback time. Screw that part about not having to pay for the sins of your father.

(Ezekiel 18:20)--"The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself."

i don't really know what to say. you certainly have a unique reality..not one i would know anything about since my experience leans exact opposite of yours.

not that i'm on board with payback, but really..why the bible verse? rampant misogyny in religion is one of the reasons we can't escape it in secular culture.

Its just a good example of when something is done to help one group of people, it inevitably hurts another group of people. While its easy to say "white males" have had it easy or whatever, it still sucks when individuals of any group are screwed over to help another group. Its the difference between legislating based on statistics and individual worst case scenarios. Its unfortunate that people can't treat others with respect to begin with AND that people use perceived racism/sexism as a means to further their career.

It all boils down to people abusing handicap tags to park close to the building when they're not really handicapped.

IDK, I looked it up and reminded of something out of Pulp Fiction, so I posted it. Maybe I'm finding my way slowly back to the lord.

I can't deny white privilege exists.. Nor to the extent that black people feel it everyday. I have no way of knowing how much as its not part of my existence. I don't know how to fix it. I am not trying to be disrespectful but in the same token I did not "make it" in this world because I was able to tie two sentences together.

i'm raising a white male. he's got plenty of obstacles to overcome. he doesn't have a golden ticket to life because he's white and male. just because i recognize white privilege and white male privilege for the reality that it is, doesn't mean that i'm putting white people or white men down.

yeah, reality is pretty damn unfortunate.

When I joined it was at the end of a mainframe dominated era and the birth of decentralization. Our IT was 90% men at the time and management was in full on panic mode after the disparity was pointed out to them at a board meeting. Since my area was the "growing" area they were trying to balance the book.

I found this to be the case with most of the companies I dealt with (balancing the book) though they were mostly in the IT areas where they had been heavily male (and white) and were trying to balance the book.

I look back when I was in high school (yea a nerd) - I was in the math club, the astronomy, the computer programming club.. none of these ever had anything but white males in them.. I learned a lot in these clubs and they really fueled my interests. We would have welcomed women / non-whites but that doesn't mean we were necessarily welcoming. I always figured it was due to non-interest.

Can I have a job in your company? I am female and asian minority :)

I said "my previous company" right?? Heh :)

In my current company I am in the minority in my group (the only white guy) and there are exactly zero white men in my chain between me and the CEO... though they are all Asian :)

Asian's don't count. They're too small of a minority to be a victim of racism or is it that they were never slaves? Oh wait, its neither.

How about Indians?? The end of the story for that previous company trying to balance the books was that they one day fired the entire 1000+ IT staff in one swoop and moved the jobs overseas. Problem solved.
