Leaving blank vs filling in "NONE" and "N/A"

big conflict here.

many many sites and guides on the web say to use "N/A" and "NONE" where appropriate. however.... the official I-485 form says...

If an item is not applicable or the answer is "none," leave the space blank

Well if we going with this advice, then perhaps it's worth noting that the confusion arises because different forms say different things. I've compiled this to help others (if anyone actually cares haha):

NNA (use 'None' or 'N/A' depending): State that an item is not applicable with "N/A." If the answer is none, write "None."
NA (only use N/A): If an item is not applicable or the answer is none, print or type N/A.
Blank (leave blank): If an item is not applicable or the answer is “none,” leave the space blank.
I-130: Petition for Alien Relative NNA
G-325a: Biographic Information NNA
G-325a: Biographic Information NNA
I-485: Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status Blank
I-864: Affidavit of Support Blank
I-693: Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record Filled out by doctor

A lot of the forms were updated last year, and with the updated forms came updated form instructions. They added bar codes to the forms and they changed the instructions to state that you should leave things that would be 'N/A' or 'None' blank. Follow the current USCIS form instructions for filling out their forms.
