Hi there,

I'm new to this forum so I hope I'm doing it right.

I've always wanted to work and live in the States and was wondering the best way to do so.

I'm 17 years old and living in the United Kingdom, and I'm currently studying for my A-Levels. I have always wanted a career in Law Enforcement and love really love to pursue this career in the United States. However, I'm not really sure how! I understand you have to be a US Citizen to apply for a job in Law Enforcement, so can anybody help me understand what I would have to do to become a US Citizen.

Thank You Very Much.

You are the right age to be thinking of your Uni options. So why not Uni is the US, there are many Degrees related to Law Enforcement that might give you future job sponsorship opportunities.

Studying over here is a great option, but can be expensive.

A cheaper alternative would be to come over on a J-1 visa as part of your university studies. If you choose a degree that offers a placement year, you could elect to do your placement in the US (providing they offer those links, best to check with potential universities), which is what I did and was a fantastic experience. I happened to meet my fiance through work and thats how I moved over, but the J-1 was a fantastic time for myself and my fellow interns.

A J-1 is a non-immigrant visa, so you would not be able to stay after your time is up but you may have made some good industry contacts during that year which could lead to future visas/employment or have met a very special American citizen that you would maybe want to build a life with here.

Good luck in your studies!

In order to be a US citizen, you need to be an LPR for 5 years (or 3 years if married to a US citizen).

For a UK citizen to fet LPR status, you will need either a close US citizen family member or US employer.

A close US citizen family member must be a parent, sibling, or child.

A US employer will need a uni degree.

To be honest with you, you need to figure out how to get LPR status before anything else.
