Social Security Number Question

I have a Social Security number from a previous J1 visa from many years ago, i was wondering when i go to the USA on a k1 visa, do i need to get a new social security number? Or do you keep the same one? If so, do i need to go the Social Security Office and update it?

Any help would be appreciated!

your number is for life, you should have put it on all the forms that requested a SS number. that's the only number you will get

the card can change but the number won't

i did put it on the forms, just wondering what i needed to do to ensure they know i am now on k1

I was in the exact same situation. I am now in the AOS process and have learned that indeed your SSN is yours for life and will continue to be yours as you go through the K1 and AOS. You can update your SS status when you get your Green Card, but apparently it isn't necessary as such. You get a new cards sans the 'valid only with DHS authorization' line.

I will wait until i have completed my AoS process once i get married to go get a new SS card that doesn't say 'Use only with DHS Authorization'

I was on a J-1 too, so I already have my number.

However, I will be popping into the SSN office to change the name on my card after we get married. Not sure whether you will be changing your last name but theres some additional info for you
