How come she doesn't qualified? I came here when I obtained my green card and on the next month I aplied for my insurance...and still have my health insurance active! Have anything change since 2004? I am aware that One requirement to qualify for health insurance is to be US Citizen or a green card holder and low income.

Hi guys. I am in dire need of advice. My grandmother in Mexico had surgery about 10 months ago and her wound wont heal. We brought her over on a tourist visa to visit a doctor and we have been told she needs treatment asap. the problem is that without insurance its costing us a fortune and we just cant afford it. My mom is a us citizen and wants to help my grandparents immigrate. The problem is time isnt on our side as the longer we take the bigger chance they might have to amputate her foot and we can wait the 6 months for the i130 and interview at consulate. What can we do that will be quicker so we can get my grandmother the medical care she needs? Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe you can apply to expedite her immigration case including a medical letter.

The others are correct; her getting a greencard (which takes closer to a year unless you get the expedite) won't mean free medical care.

Have you considered looking into private hospitals in Mexico or even other South American countries? That will likely be significantly cheaper.

I believe it depends on her income. If she doesn't have any income, I am sure she will qualify.

Ohhh yes.

How you could miss it is another issue.

She could qualify for insurance but she will not qualify for Medicare as she has never paid into the system and she can't get Medicaid because she has not been and LPR for at least five years. Even if she did get Medicaid the sponsor could be sued by the government to pay back Medicaid for what it spent on her.

She is certainly welcome to obtain insurance either through the ACA or privately or through an employer. To obtain insurance through ACA she must have a green card.

As I mentioned above that is not the case.

That depends on the state. In California almost everyone who meets the income criteria can apply for Medi-Cal, the California version of Medicaid. This includes new immigrants (there is no five year bar), as well as those who are unlawfully present. They can also apply through Covered California, the state's Obamacare exchange. However, applicants who are unlawfully present are not eligible for any health plan sold through the exchange - they can only use the exchange to apply for Medi-Cal if they're eligible.

Ok, so a state by state basis. Again it would help for him to run the figures through the system for his state to find out for sure or to make a phone call (not so certain of reliability of information) to find out.
