NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Staten Island mother was furious Friday, after her 9-year old daughter was told she was overweight – not by a bully, but by her schoolicon1.png.

As CBS 2’s Sonia Rincon reported Friday evening, Gwendolyn Williams, 9, brought homeicon1.png a “Fitnessgram” from P.S. 29 this week.

Her mother, Laura Bruji Williams, told 1010 WINS that Gwen was upset because the message said that, according to her body mass index, she was overweight.

Gwendolyn is 4-foot-1 and weighs just 66 pounds.

“At first I thought, is this some was misunderstanding? Is this just like, did they, like, switch my BMI with somebody else’s?” Gwendolyn said. “But then I noticed that it wasn’t a mistake and they were actually calling me overweight.”

Laura Williams couldn’t believe it either.

“She’s not overweight,” Laura Williams told 1010 WINS. “She’s healthylb_icon1.png. She’s active. She plays softball. She plays outside with her friends. So, it was ludicrous to read that.

“What really concerned me is that then she started asking questions about, you know, she touched her thigh, and she said ‘Is this what they mean?’ And I said ‘Gwen, no, everybody’s thigh jiggles like that,’” Williams said. “It just really disturbed me on a deep level.”

........“That’s up to the pediatrician,” said parent Cheryl Paluzzi. “If I feel my kid is healthy, I shouldn’t have something from the school telling me that my child is overweight.”

The Department of Educationicon1.png is defending the Fitnessgrams as a way to help students develop personal goals for lifelong health. The department said the program is both popular and effective.

“Contrary to today’s coverage, Fitnessgram notices are a longstanding tool that help families stay aware of weight and fitness as one part of an overall approach to ensuring their child’s health,” a representative of the Department of Education said.'t parent teacher conference,” she said. “Don’t make the kids feel any worse.”

........As for Gwendolyn, she feels just fine.

“I know I’m not overweight,” she said, “because I’m only 66 pounds.”

Mother Outraged After 9-Year-Old Daughter Sent Home From School With Note Calling Her Overweight
4-Foot-1, 66-Pound Gwendolyn Williams Received A 'Fitnessgram' From P.S. 29May 23

The letters were supposed to be for parents. But both Gwendolyn and her mother said it was inevitable that the children would open them.

“They’re children. They’re going to peek,” Laura Williams said. “It says their name on it.”

In addition to a high BMI, the letter said the third grader was overweight by a pound.

“I calculated her BMI on another fitness website, and she came out right in the middle range of normal,” Laura Williams said.

But she said it was just being labeled overweight that could have been devastating for children.

“I worry about other girls who maybe aren’t as fit as Gwen, and maybe that affects them in a negative way,” Laura Williams said.

Gwendolyn said of her friends was humiliated by the letter.

“I know my friend said she came home in, almost, tears because she was called obese,” she said.

In fact, one mother told CBS 2 off camera that her daughter, who is a little chubby, dreads the Fitnessgrams. Other parents questioned why the schools do them at all.

“That’s up to the pediatrician,” said parent Cheryl Paluzzi. “If I feel my kid is healthy, I shouldn’t have something from the school telling me that my child is overweight.”

The Department of Educationicon1.png is defending the Fitnessgrams as a way to help students develop personal goals for lifelong health. The department said the program is both popular and effective.

“Contrary to today’s coverage, Fitnessgram notices are a longstanding tool that help families stay aware of weight and fitness as one part of an overall approach to ensuring their child’s health,” a representative of the Department of Education said. “For almost a decade, children have received the same commonsense tips, alongside the results of their physical fitness tests. This is a program that is both popular and effective.”

But Paluzzi said if the schools have to do them, they should not hand them to the children.

“Give them to the parents. Do them at parent teacher conference,” she said. “Don’t make the kids feel any worse.”

As for Gwendolyn, she feels just fine.

“I know I’m not overweight,” she said, “because I’m only 66 pounds.”

They need to stop worrying about kids' weights and worry about their activity levels. Oh, wait. That would mean giving time back to recess and gym class and taking it away from pandering to standardized tests.

Even if the girl were overweight, what matters is that her activity level is good. Can she run and play? Yes, good. Does she do this lots? Yes? She plays in organized sports and doesn't puff after running a little? Yes good.

There are 'overweight' people who can run a marathon and I guarantee they're healthier than me (skinny, but not very active).

I was overweight as a child. The abuse was brutal. It's not funny.

Then I became a US Army hard core Infantry man then officer, and became a leader of men. Hundreds of push ups a day ran 15 miles like a jog around the block. Trained in hand to hand ....etc

I ran into a couple of child hood bullies. Making them basically beg me not to snap their scrawny little long haired necks necks was good therapy.

If you are not genetically pre disposed to over eat-god bless you, you are not thin because you are smarter than fat people, you are thin because your eating mechanism is not broken. Do you really think most obese people would not die to be thin.

Think about this. What if you had a powerful addiction, and it was not a substance like alcohol or drugs, that you could just walk away from and not be around it. What if the evidence of that addiction was readily obvious to all, and you could not hide it like the drug addict, alcoholic, porn addict.

It's easy when you have never struggled with weight to make hurtful comments, demote obese people to sub humans. Makes you fell all better about your own pitiful existence right. What's amazing is that many of you that do it, would howl in protest if someone labeled or mocked a drug addict, transsexual, a person suffering schizophrenic disorder, poor spellers etc.

I am overweight and at age 52 can still and do ride an elliptical for an hour and Bench over 350 lbs. My blood pressure is 115/75 and my Chl is 110. I would be healthier if i dropped a few lbs, but for the last two days i had almost zero carbs and drank veggie shakes. Quite frankly i think i would rather die.

Veggie shakes?!?! If you're going to do the low carb thing, at least make it worthwhile with some steak and sausage or something.

I don't know much about blood pressure or cholesterol, but I do think that it's very likely that you are more healthy than I!

Also, zero carb is much more dangerous than lowering your calorie intake. Just saying.

Doing anything to that extreme probably isn't a great idea. Zero carbs is dangerous if you dive right in. If you lower your carbs gradually and let your body adjust, most people will do OK. Not everyone. Entire civilizations have lived that way.

The problem is when people do it as a fad to lose weigh quick and/or don't listen when their bodies tell them it's not working.

Well, most civilizations that have lived that way actually have enzymatic differences in their bodies, similar to how a lot of people from Asia are lactose intolerant whilst those of European descent are much less likely to do so.

And I didn't really state it was dangerous unto itself, just that it's much more dangerous than lowering caloric intake overall. Which can be done by doing things like, for example, eating a salad with lots of leafy greens and only a bit of dressing prior to eating your main course, or a broth-based (not cream-based!) soup, so you feel satisfied with eating less of the calorie dense main course.

Calorie density is an important thing to remember and carbs (especially whole grains and fruit/veggies) are typically less calorie dense than fats or proteins. I, personally, find it a lot more satisfying to practice ways to lower the calorie density of my foods than to eat less. So having a nice leafy salad before my meal or, for example, making my tuna salad sandwich with a wholegrain bread, lots of lettuce and the tuna salad itself with lots of grated or finely chopped vegetables and just barely enough oil and lemon or mayo to make it not be dry. A lot of finely chopped celery, onion and some grated carrot for colour, and a can of tuna can make eight sandwiches instead of 3-4, and the calorie density is much lower, the fibre much higher and I feel satsified longer. Or if I'm craving fried rice, make it at least 50% chopped veggies, minimize the oil as much as possible (I use a pump sprayer to spray a little oil over the skillet and then over the rice so that I'm not making oil puddles anywhere to be soaked up) and use brown rice instead of white.

Much better than avoiding bread and rice altogether, imo, and I feel like I'm getting a wider variety of nutrients being creative with adding veggies rather than just eliminating foods.

should not have said Zero carbs Obliviously ground veggies have carbs. I should have said cut way back and trying to eat lower amounts of healthy carbs.

People are fat because they intake more calories than they burn. The disorder angel is highly overused IMHO. You were fat, because you ate more than you burned. The military changed that for you can what do you know, you lost weight. Magic. Laziness and lack of self control are the real fat disorders.

So you would agree that Laziness and lack of self control are the cause of Poverty, drug abuse, alcoholism etc etc.
