C. and I will have a second 'wedding' reception around our one-year anniversary (assuming everything goes well these next few months) in Canada, and we're doing it as most of his family and friends can't afford to travel to the U.S. It will be sort of a big deal; at least I'm told I'll have to wear the dress again. :)

But as for the first wedding party? I agree with the consensus that sometime in the first six months would be good.

Reading these 2 wedding posts, I'm wondering how many couples plan to follow the civil cermony with the big wedding and then the big wedding never happens...that is my biggest fear with doing 2.

I know what you mean. We're planning on having a smallish wedding (80 guests) here, so we'll have already had one party. Thing is, he probably can hit 200 guests back home who want to come without batting an eye, and they can't come here, so we're at least very serious about doing this second reception.

Alex+R,

If you are nervous about family members & friends thinking that you may be after some gifts, you could always include the phrase "Your presence is our present" on your invitations when the day comes. This is very common when a couple or individual wants to have a celebration, but is not concerned about gifts.

What I want to do is sort of not have any wedding at all, but I don't think I'm allowed to go that route! Ok, a party could be fun. I'm just worried nobody will come! That's always been my fear with parties though...

Alex,

For me the 6 months sounds pretty reasonable and it won't conflict with your other friends wedding. And I won't worry too much about nobody coming, for what I know (IMO), people love going to weddings! ^_^

We got married 11-10-06 & are having the fancy do in 2 weeks (2-2-07). His sister just had a baby, Xmas was here, etc so we did it as soon as we could. Thing is, I already feel married. It kinda sucks - I wanted the elation/newness like at the first wedding.

I wouldn't wait more than 4 months MAX, if you can.

Joel and I plan on doing a reaffirmation ceremony as soon as we can travel home to NS. There were so many family and friends who couldn't fly down for our intimate wedding so we'd like to at least have something back home for them.

Yeah, I don't really want to plan a "big wedding" either, but I have to. With all the paper work I have to deal with right now, the last thing I want to do is add more ####### to my plate. Although we're getting married on Monday, we don't consider it our "real" wedding date. We're having the big ceremony later in the year because it'll give us more time to save up and since it's abroad, make sure he gets AP so he can leave the country. Maybe I'll get excited about it later on, but I'm currently overwhelmed with everything else!
