Do i really need to have SSN before the weeding?

We went to the SSA the other day n said we need to wait for two weeks or more. So does it mean we need to go back there n change it again after we got married?

Hi Dea! In addition to Girl from celebes' response, you have to make sure that you have at least 15 days from your I-94's expiration, especially if you opt to visit the SSA office after you have your marriage cert. If there is only 14 or less days, they will no longer process your SSN application.

Ok, just a gentle reminder that you should have your actual marriage certificate when you go there. This is the only proof they accept for a name change (for K1s), not the marriage license even.

Oh, don't feel discourage. I know how difficult it is when non-English native speakers like you and I have to deal with English native speakers on the phone. Just call them back, ask about your case number and be ready to provide them the petitioner and beneficiary info such as full names and date of birth. Just make a short conversation so you don't have to hear the long explanation that you can't understand most of times.

Don't listen to them about have to wait 30 days again to call. They said to all people including me, . But I did not listen, called them the next day, and voila...they had my case file in their system. Just give a try and won't do any harm. The other possibility is to ask your fiance make a phone call. I know it is difficult since he would be at work by then. My then-fiance (my husband now) did call them at once and left him furious because the lady on the phone was not sound nice. That's why I took over the job though sometimes I did not understand what they told me, .

Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to lecture here. There is a difference between marriage license and marriage certificate. You apply marriage license for permission to get married in a state where you apply it. After married, you have to return the marriage license to the county clerk and they will mailed the marriage certificate as a proof that your marriage already in the system. Before you return the marriage license, your marriage is still not in vital records yet. In Florida, a newlywed couple has to return the marriage license within 10 days after they get married.

You will use a copy or certified marriage certificate to apply for different purposes for instance change name on SSN, apply for adjustment of status, etc. So, what Sweet Cakes told you was correct. You did not do wrong, even my husband did not know how to get married in the US - both of us never been married before-. So, I understand the confusion between using term of marriage license and marriage certificate.

LOL. My husband also left furious because had to wait on the line almost 30 minutes. But, again, if you have a bit patience, a letter from NVC will arrived as soon as possible. After that, you can start fill out the DS-160 form as per instruction says on the letter.

It is best to get your ssn before your 90 days expire and before you apply for your aos.

IF you apply for it after your 90days have expired you cannot receive your ssn until you have your green card.

which means that if you get your EAD you cannot work as you do not have an ssn.

IF you apply for it first before your 90days expire you can now work once you have your EAD, and you can just change the name on the ssn once you are married.
