That would be the alternative - exporting the old. With the birth rates among Europeans over the last several decades, there's no way to keep the old afloat unless you bring in fresh, young blood. Someone will have to work - you can't have half the population in or near retirement. Not gonna work. Not with the retirement that Europeans expect to be able to live out.
