Thanks

ness anad i stayed just off copacabana beach - this was due to the saying the area around the consulate was not exactly a nice place to stay. taxi rides there and back, about 50-60 reais total.

I was adviced that it is safer to stay in a nearby neighborhood - i.e. Botafogo.

We're looking at simple hotels/hostels because we're not really chique and I want to be near the beach. There are plenty of hotels like this that are only 10-15 minutes from the consulate by train or taxi.

I'd use google.

We're staying in a hostel this time. Newton's Rooftop I think. My favorite Rio hostel is called Mellow Yellow but they don't have private bathrooms there. I lived in the dorms there for about 5 weeks once. And two weeks again later. :)

PS to Meredith both those hostels are in Copa very near the beach and the subway (which goes right to the consulate). I'll let you know how the new one we stay in goes (next week already EEEEEEE!!!!!!!). If you stay in Ipanema you don't have subway access, fyi :)

Thank you for the information! I still have a long way to go before I get to the consulate interview, but I am trying to plan in advance.

I think it is better to plan in advance. A friend of mine just found out her Brazilian fiance has an interview in 2 weeks. She does not have a visa, airline tickets, the I-134 or other documents filled out. He has not had his blood tests or x-rays done, no medical exam scheduled, criminal records...etc.

I believe they can do it fast - they're sure working on it, but it's going to be very stressful. I think that the more you do now the less you have to do later. There are some parts to this process that cannot be done in advance but the majority I believe can.

Good luck.

I've been very near that hotel at night and I know just where it is. Scary stuff at night, although it's a nice business area in the day. I got followed there. :(

I stayed at http://hotelmontecastelo.com.br/. I liked to stay there, it is in a safe area. Within 15 minutes of walking you are in the Consulate.

Actually, I stayed at Monte Castelo too and didn't walk (you can if you want but will take 30 min), I got a cab for R$10 roundtrip to the consulate. It's a residential neighbourhood.

Yes, yes Alex+R! If he wanna just stay there for the interview I think during the day it's ok, but if he wants to go around; to know the city, i really think you should not stay downtown.

We stayed here at Monte Castelo also. It was clean, simple and close (15 min walk) and they have internet access which was a little expensive but came in handy.

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .
