Not really, I pulled a little Lefty disinformation, the new proposal does modify the policy to include non-LPR's. So there is a policy change here in the new proposal. But obviously there has been a long history of non-US citizens benefitting from service in our Armed forces.

Assuming that the new policy includes the requirement for honorable service I think I can support it as a path to resolve illegal status.

Yep, illegal canon fodder will be awarded citizenship posthumously. A USCIS application for that exists already - the N-644. We're all set.

The issue remains these kids are not here illegally, for they were brought over by their parents or other circumstances. You can't say they were brought against their will because they came with their families. They are not Americans or LPRs because hey have no papers, while at the same time, for most, having known no other country but ours. If their heart is to serve in the military, I vote yes.

If it is one of the options for them to normalize their residential and/or citizenship status, fine. But if it is the only option for them to do so, then I have an issue with this.

I agree. It should not be the only path.

This may be the only option since no one wants to give them a path to citizenship.

Serving the military may expedite their citizenship process, that is true, but the option should remain for them to become LPRs and go for citizenship if they so desire.

I agree, but it doesn't look like this will be happening for a while, unless Mr. P makes it an executive order.

Wrong Kemo sahbee

I would say most of them are victims (no real choice in the matter).. But the victimizers are the families that brought them over, not the government that now has to deal with the problem. When we are upset at their plight lets remember who we should be upset at ... the ones who caused it.

With all the wars we got involved they need all the new applicants they can get. Furthermore, most of these kids are Americans, culturally, so that might help them earn their status.

Why, then, are experienced service personnel being cut and numbers generally being drawn down?

Wouldn't you think, given the opportunity, that keeping the trained, experienced personnel you already have would be preferable to having to train up new meat at their expense?

Many are retiring or just burned out from the current campaigns. Even during austere reductions in the size of our military, we never stopped taking in new recruits.

Different situation.

The cutting of experienced personnel, who don't plan to leave, is going on now. Friends of ours have a son in the USAF, who just faced this. He didn't want out, but was left with no choice.

If you are heading toward a smaller Armed Forces, as the US currently is, surely you want to keep your young, experienced personnel where possible?

I'm not against the practice in principle. Military service is an honourable and patriotic career path. But to make this push now, when government policy is reducing the size of the military, smacks of politicking, at the expense of good military sense.

And that is why I believe the Pentagon agreed with this policy. It will give these kids a chance to earn the privilege of both serving our country and becoming a part of it, out and in the open.

p.s. Chances are there is more to the story your friend's kid is telling you. Not everyone will make a career in the Air Force. You need to be the best amongst the very best.
