Im currently living and working in Seattle, WA. My wife just moved here from Asia and recently got a green card. Unfortunatly I just lost my job here & have a limited time left in which to act until money runs out. I've been applying to various local companies in my area of expertise, either they're not hiring or not interested. Have gotten a few "bites" from other companys in Cali & Illinois but the most interested one was in London, Ontario.

If I dont get any other offers from within the U.s. very very soon I will be forced to take this and relocate..now the question is what happens to my wife's Green Card status, and what must I do in terms of paper work if we really have to move there on short notice? Im talking within 2 months max?

I have no idea yet, should I get the job there in Ontario, if the company will offer any help in terms of visa's ect. but its a real bind & time/money is running out!

Any advice/help is appreciated!

this is just a cut and paste, but in regards to your wife's greencard status

"Once you are a permanent resident, travel is generally not a problem, provided you have a valid passport from your country of citizenship and your Permanent Resident card. Currently, USCIS is issuing permanent residence cards for 10 year periods. You must renew this card before the expiration date.

If you plan to remain outside of the U.S. for a period of more than six months, it is necessary to obtain a reentry permit before leaving the country. Application for a reentry permit is made using Form I-131 Advance Parole travel document.

If you must remain outside the U.S. for extended periods of time, please note that obtaining a reentry permit or making a return trip to the U.S. once or twice a year for a few weeks will not be enough to maintain permanent resident status. USCIS examines the reasons for the extended absence, the individual's intentions, and other factors establishing the person's ties to the U.S."

What is she intending to do to maintain the US as her permanent residency?.

Technically you can lose your residency in a day, sell up in the US and move, and its gone.

Pracically if you come back fairly soon you probably will not have an issue.

Bear in mind that Canadian Immigration does not move very fast either.

Actually, the company in London would have to apply first to the appropriate federal department (used to be Human Resources Development Canada - don't know if it has changed names again or not) for permission to hire a non-Canadian citizen or permanent resident. To do so they have to prove to HRDC's satisfaction that there is no one in Canada available to accept the job. Then you would have to apply for an Employment Authorization providing proof of your qualifications for the job and their validation to employ from outside of the country. That takes time to accomplish and I don't believe it can be done in two months unless they already have the HRDC authorization. Even still 2 months is pushing it for employment authorization. You may wish to check out the website for Canadian immigration to determine what you can expect:

www.cic.gc.ca/

You may also want to check out the NAFTA visa - it too is job specific but the job may fall within its parameters and the process is a bit easier, although still takes some time. The company has to be on board to assist with part of the process.

Thanks for the replys, yep I wanted her to maintain her perm residency. If like your also saying it would take more t han 2 months then that might be beyond my time to wait as I needed a job a bit quicker. But I'll see what they say. Thanks again

But *how* is she going to maintain her US residency IF you move to London Ontario, providing you get the job? Is she going to remain here in the States? It would seem to me if she moves with you then she would be in danger of losing her GC status. I know the job market sucks...my husband hasn't been able to find a job in months. *sigh*

Boiler, as for the TN Visa, I think that's just for Canadians to work here in the States....I think.

London, Ontario? A computer job of some kind? I can't believe the only job for you would be in London. Keep trying to find something in the States so you can both stay here, even if it's a stop gap job until you find something better. (Just one opinion.)
