Greetings,

My wife and I plan to apply for her I-751 as soon as we can in July 2014, but in October we must return to the UK for the wedding of her best friend. Her current GC expires in September, will it be possible for us o travel in October?

Yes, this is true. But If she's leaving the country, she will need to bring with her the letter USCIS will send to her granting her the 1-yr extension. This is sent to your wife after applying for R.O.C. Don't be caught out of the country without that letter. If her GC expires before she comes back, they will probably asked to see the letter.

From our experience, needed both the expired conditional green card and that one year extension letter. Not to leave, but to come back. Also checked the expiration date on my wife's foreign passport, that was near to expire, so had to make a trip to Chicago to her consulate to get that renewed.

When it rains, it pours. Also make sure your flight number is not 370.
