Social Security Number Question

Hi Guys

Quick question, I was in the US a few years ago on a J-1 (Student Visa) & was issued a Social Security Number Card whilst living in NY on this Visa, so that I could legally work & open a bank account whilst there.

I left the US when my Visa expired. Does anyone know whether this number would still be valid & in their system (even if the ss number was issued for a temporary work visa at the time) & can thus be used instead of applying for a new one. I'm mainly asking as the DS-260 Form asks whether we need to apply for a new card or not.

Any help on this is much appreciated.

Cheers

Yep - you are going to keep your old number. That is useful in a way as it will help you establish credit history quickly - especially if you have "old" accounts.

I suggest you check your credit profile on a site like https://www.creditkarma.com/ so you can see what is on your record.
