Since we are giving good advice:

I am really torn about whether to keep my daughter back in Kindergarten. She's socially ready for 1st grade - she's a social butterfly, listens, seems to have great understanding of others, but academically... I just never expected her to be so far behind. She is the complete opposite of me and I don't know if she just seems more behind because of the town we live in, being the youngest in the class, or just being a late bloomer academically.

For the record, her father was held back in kindergarten and I skipped first grade and honestly, I don't think things worked out that differently for either of us, else then me needing to get over that "I'm special and the rules don't apply to me problem" which might have been more a factor of teachers all throughout school letting me test of subjects and go hangout in the library or only having to go to school one day a week.

I know they prefer social progression in our current town, but I went to an event at school today and some of the other girls were just flying through books and she really still struggles with the very very basic readers. I don't want her to feel stupid, but I also don't want her to feel out of place. She's the youngest, but she's already one of the tallest, and she'd really tower over her classmates if I held her back.

Hard choices.

Long answer, As a person with a disability and a mom with kids with disabilities it doesn't help. Sure you will notice a huge difference in her grades but that will only be because everything is a repeat for her. I was kept back in grade 1, the teachers told my parents how it was not failing (that's #######) and how much better I would be( it didn't matter). When my oldest was in Kindergarten they wanted to keep him back I refused, he did well in grade 1, then we moved new school grade 2 they wanted to keep him back again. I said no but I didn't put it in writing big mistake they held him back, he lost all his friends so that was not helpful, and he still didn't improve. They tried the same thing for my daughter, I refused she had the same teacher for grade 1&2 that teacher tried to fail her both years. She was a nice women but a lousy teacher she did not know how to teach kids who learn different. All she wanted to do was keep kids behind. She had a class of 18 kids and she would always fail anywhere to 2 - 4 kids that number is too high.

My nephew's teacher wanted to hold him back in grade 2, I told his mother not to do it also. She pushed that he goes on to grade 3 and he soared. Many times it is the teacher who is failing the kids my nephew did not have any issues after that.

Now if your daughter needs a bit extra get a tutor it will do more good then keeping her behind, please don't fall for the ####### about her being the youngest in the class the other kids won't notice trust me they do and it hurts or the ####### about how she won't remember because she will.

I remember once when my BIL visited us (before he became my BIL) and he rented a car with license plates from Krakow.

He was surprised that other drivers weren't alowing him on the roads and so on.

what's up with US education system keeping the kids back in school?

Is there any exam (for every subject) every grade to determine the kid's ability?

In Singapore, there is not such thing as keeping back in school.

You only repeat the grade/level if you fail the exams badly --> failing majority of the subjects.
