Hello All!

I just submitted my DS-260 but I have a few questions:

1. I studied in Canada for 2 years, but I have no plan to go there anytime soon. My husband is from India and has lived there all his life before he moved to Kenya. Will we need Police Certificates from these countries?

India is do-able, but I dont want to go through the hassle and expense of travelling to Canada just for a police certificate. Also, Canadian visas are like gold dust here so I dont want to risk a rejection.

Please, you need to make sure you read all the instructions . You risk losing your chance at a visa if you don't, especially when it comes to something like this. You will NOT get a visa if you do not present required police certificates. If the reciprocity tables state you can get a document from a country you will be expected to show it. Link to Canadian civil docs here http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/fees/reciprocity-by-country/CA.html#docs

... If you had read the DV selectee instructions properly you shouldn't be asking IF you need the police certificates and you should have found the page I linked to already....

Edit: Norbert, you need to read the instructions too, they are clear about what you need depending how long you have been where.

DVer, I realise you were trying to help, but a US consulate will not give a fig about what a Canadian site says. They will care about what the Dept of State site says.

For Canada, you can get a police certificate through the mail, as long as you get your fingerprints officially taken at a police station where you currently live:

Thanks for the reply. I have read and understood that the documents are necessary, but the process of applying for a Canadian Visa, going there just for a certificate and coming back is too expensive, which is why I wanted to confirm if it is a confirmed rejection if you do not submit them. I have got some excellent input and will not wait for the next step. Thank you all... wonderful people.

You don't need to get back to Canada to get a police report.

You can get your fingerprints taken by your local police on either form c-216-c OR on your local police's form (provided they use the same fingerprint layout as RCMP) and send them to RCMP. You will need to pay $25 and they will send you a Certified Criminal Record Check report to your address wherever you are. However, this process takes about 22 weeks and starting July 1st, RCMP will not accept paper applications.

Alternatively, there are some finger scanning agencies that are approved by RCMP. You can send them your fingerprints which have taken by your local police on either form c-216-c OR on your local police's form (provided they use the same fingerprint layout as RCMP) and they will digitize them and send them electronically to RCMP which will cut down the processing time from 22 weeks to 3 business days. They can also receive the report on your behalf and forward it to you by courier if you want to get it early. Try this one fingerscan.ca They charge $125 for their service plus $25 RCMP fee but they are professionals.

You need the police report otherwise, your visa will be rejected due to incomplete documents.

Hope this helps

You know, I do start to lose patience. I gave you a link, which you should have found yourself first if you read the instructions anyway, and if you read it and followed it properly, it showed clearly you do not have to go to Canada to get it.

I will say once again, you risk being rejected for the visa if you do not read and follow all the instructions properly. Please ensure you know what the official site tells you to do. Everyone here is trying to be helpful but if you do not do what is stated clearly on the DoS website don't be surprised when you get rejected.

Lol! Sorry I wrote my reply in a hurry.

1. I understood that I can get the police certificate by mail. Thank you all for the input. I was just letting you know the reason behind my post i.e. I only wanted to confirm what I already knew - YOU NEED TO GIVE THE CO NO OPPORTUNITY FOR DENIAL.

2. 'I will not wait for the next step' should be I will now wait for the next step :)

Off topic but very important, is it worth it in the end? I have a fairly good life in Kenya though the insecurity is a big issue. Currently I earn enough to take a 2 month international vacation every year and I have a fulltime housekeeper. Will I afford the same luxuries there? I am also a little worried about the Western Culture, The last thing I want is my daughter telling me she wants to move in with her boyfirend at sixteen. She is only 2 now, but a mother worries. LOL

Only you can decide if it is worth it or not. Very few people have a live-in housekeeper here. As for your daughter, it really depends on how you raise her, and also her environment (better neighborhood= better schools) But who knows! Goodluck!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

No one can answer that for you. You need to decide whether an easier life or a safer life is better. This is the choice a lot of middle class people from Africa have to make. It's easier decisions for the not well off (happy to take minimum wage jobs and work for their kids future) and the relatively wealthy (who may have to compromise some but not most or perhaps even not much of their standard of living). Much more tough for those in the middle where the trade offs are more noticeable.

The issue with doing this with paper fingerprints is that the process time is many months, like up to 5 months. I was in Australia and needed one, you can't do the digital fingerprints when out of canada with rcmp, best way if out of the country is to deal with a 3rd party approved by the rcmp to do this. first go get you fingerprints taken at a local police station with the correct form for the rcmp, and send it out to the 3rd party , they deal with the rcmp, and you can get the 3 days processing time for digital prints. I did this and it was very fast , no troubles at all. I dealt with www.fingerscan.ca but there is others
