Hi

So I am preparing my POE for 3rd July and I was wondering how some of you got your money to the US ??? I want to do it the safest and cheapest possible way.

I do not mind travelling with the maximum either.

so how did you do it.

Thanks

Paul

I had $7,500 with me in my carry-on. You have to declare anything above $10,000.

People talk about using services like currencyfair, and I was thinking about it, but in the end decided to take cash.

Did you withdraw the cash in dollars from your bank or in sterling then convert ??

I just got dollars exchanged at the airport. The exchange rate was pretty good. That doesn't mean I did it the best way, though. Some people have said bringing pounds across and then getting them converted here gets you more, but I'm not sure.

Well I used my bank card to get the dollars, but even if I used cash why would they? It's your money.

If you are bringing 25,000 dollars or less it will be cheaper to bring it in cash, on you. Just make sure you declare it if you bring more than 10K dollars. There are no taxes to be paid on the money. Shop around, for some exchange houses will give you a better rate for larger transactions.

If i do it through XE.com i get a rate of 1.68 to the GBP not too bad

And safer than traveling with all that cash.

This is another service some people use http://www.hifx.co.uk/personal/online-transfers.aspx
