Can we ship belongings from Italy to the US?

My fiance and I are gathering funds and sorting out expenses. He doesn't own many possessions, but we'd like to keep as much of what he has as possible which includes rare books and other collectible items which would need to be moved from Italy to the US. Are there any shipping companies that could possibly give some sort of a reasonable price? What is the best way to get personal belongings from Italy to the US aside from paying for an extra piece of checked luggage? If it is possible to ship items, how long in advance does someone need to reserve the service? How long does it take for shipments to arrive?

of course there are many companies that can ship your items. You should post this in the Italy forum to find others from there with suggestions as to who might be the most reasonably-priced.

You can ship an entire household - automobile included - to the US if you are moving back or to the US. Call a moving company that specializes in international moves. They will pack, crate, ship, do all the paperwork stateside and deliver to your door. If you ship by sea, it should take an avg of 6-8 weeks for you to be able to receive your belongings.
