Hey,

1. Go to the pharmacy and print out all your prescriptions in English that you will be needing. Buy extra medication that you can get by until you are covered from your husbands health insurance.

2. Depending on the state but not in Maryland at the least we didn't do any impediments to marriage

3. Make sure that you have at least 3-5 birth certificates from Maistraatti before leaving the country (just makes everything more easier and you don't have to order it from here like I had to, LOL).

Also if you keep finnish bank accounts, bring some online banking codes that you can access the accounts from the US.

Thank you so much Katri, this was helpful (and quick!)!
The tip about Birth certificates is also really good, I wouldn't have thought of that! Should they have Apostille too, do you happen to know?
I also didn't know that they can print out things in the Pharmacy like that, good to know! Do you know about the diagnoses themself, do I need to have some kind of proof of those? 🤔

You might want to take few Apostille and then you could just make copies of them. At the AOS you will need them and also for the interview when that time comes. Yes, you can go to pharmacy and ask them to print out them (its free) and you can also ask from Kela if you need to buy more medication that the prescriptions normally would allow you to. They have a certain form for that (like you could buy medication for 6 months for a year which you couldn't normally do in Finland).

Depending on what kind of diagnose it is... If it's something major, you would need to translate them all officially. With my own, I basically just said to my doctor I have this and this and I my medication have been this. And then she just gave me the prescription (might be different name here). But I don't have any major issues though. When you did your medical did the doctor put your diagnosis in the paperwork?

They did put the diagnosis and meds that I currently use for it to my paperwork. I assume that is good. I think I’ll call in and ask for extract from their database to prove my diagnosis.

The challenge with my medication is that it is forbidden (or even illegal, not sure) to carry more than one month’s supply with you.. makes things a bit challenging, so I have to prepare well. But I think I should be fine with these tips! At least I hope so 😅 Thank you so much for our help!

Hello all!  I finally joined the happy group of K1-visa holders last week! Yay!

I am moving to the States in about 3 weeks, so right now I am busy with all the preparations, and I have a couple of specific questions I thought maybe you guys can help me with. 😊

1. I have a couple of health things that need regular care and prescribed medicine: does anyone know what do I need to bring with me from Finland to show that I have been diagnosed with them? Do those kind of documents need to be professionally translated?
Any suggestions how to proceed with finding the new doctors and such? My future husband has a good insurance, and my health care will also be covered by it once we get married.
2. Does anyone happen to know if I need to have the Request to examine impediments to marriage (esteettömyystodistus) done prior getting married in the States? We are getting married in Washington State.
3. Is there something else that I need to officially do for the country of Finland about the move than these: let Maistraatti know, let Posti know, let Kela know, do the marriage paperwork (let them know I got married after we do so)?

Thank you so much everyone! I have tried looking for the information on these, but it has turned out quite difficult, or maybe I am just so excited/nervous about the move that I have hard time understanding direct instructions 😅

WELCOME :)

Happy to have you join us and I am glad to see you're finally approved and getting ready to begin your journey to the states! Katri said everything perfectly and is correct with all of the advice given as that is what my wife did. Bringing multiple birth certificates was also very beneficial prior to coming here so you don't need to wait for multiple certified copies in the mail if you need additional which in Maryland we did so it was helpful having them already. The prescriptions as she said will not be an issue but again make sure it is in English. My wife kept her FInnish bank account as well so as Katri said make sure you bring banking codes for you to use. When you get a chance look at my Timeline as my wife wrote reviews as well as questions they asked you at the border and so on upon moving here that I think you will find helpful. Let us know if you need anything else :)

Hey! Just found this forum nice to see other Finnish people here! I have a question. We got our NVC number and now our case is sent to the embassy. (K-1 visa) Can I already book the medical exam or should I wait until we hear from the embassy that our case has arrived to Finland? Is there anything else I can do while waiting? Like fill the ds-160? Thank you!!😊

It has been awhile now since I've dealt with the K-1 Visa, but I remember we waited to receive packet 3 from the embassy before we scheduled any appointments and what not. I'm not sure if you can schedule anything before you receive packet 3, so I hope someone else might also share their experience! :)

Send email to the embassy. They will send the package 3 to your email. Yes, you can book the medical already.

Welcome!!!! Make sure you come back here and keep us updated along your journey :) Also we waited until we received Packet 3 before we scheduled our medical exam. The packet will contain all of the details in it that you will need. Will not take long to receive it as the embassy is quite quick in Finland.

Okay! Thank you everyone😊

You're very welcome! One thing I must mention when you go for your Medical is make absolute sure they check off that you received your Chickenpox Vaccine and that they put the date when you received it. They had mentioned it wasn't needed when she went and we ended up having to do the entire thing over again with a Civil Surgeon in the USA as we received an RFE when you do your adjustment of Status (I-485)
