Updating SSN card after EAD issued

Your new card will say "Valid for work only with DHS authorization", as that can only be removed if you are a US citizen or an LPR and you show them your green card.

Then I'm hoping she didn't balls it up and put in that I am a LPR. I did tell her I am in the process of the application for the GC and entered as a K1 and she's sending it off to confirm with the DHS anyway though.

Well, we went in today and not really sure what happened. Long story short, she asked me if I'd dropped my middle name and I said yes, so, for example, my previous SSN card said Jane Joan Smith, now my name is Jane Smith Brown. She didn't seem to ask anymore on that, that was fine.

She asked what status I am in, I said I was on a K-1, and am currently in the process of applying for a green card. She took a screen shot of my EAD and marriage certificate and said she has to send off copies of my stuff to the DHS just to check they're alright with them, and then my new SS card should come in with my new name on it and without the "DHS authorization" remark.

The receipt they gave me says:

"Before we can issue you a social security number card, we must verify the document(s) you gave us to show your Alien status with the Federal, State or local office in the United States that issued the document(s). This may take up to 4 weeks.

If the office verifies the authenticity of your document(s) we will mail you a Social Security number card. If the office does not verify your document(s), you are not eligible for a Social Security number card and we will inform you of this in writing."

Then it goes on to say I can still work while waiting for it to be issued. She let me keep my old one while this goes through.

Thoughts? :/

o.O

I got the same letter from the guy at the window too.

Odd they let you keep your old SSN card, really must be a diff system in state offices...

sorry for the question, what is it then if your ss card has the wording "DHS authorization"? will this bar potential employers to hire you? so is it advisable to get ssn after you get your gc?

It means exactly what it says, that you need DHS authorisation to use that social security card for employment purposes.

DHS authorisation = your EAD or green card.
